My wife and I have enjoyed dozens of vacations that emphasized wine tasting. On such vacations, we sometimes encounter a winery or restaurant that greatly exceeds our expectations. We recently tasted wines in the Finger Lakes and dined at the Burnt Rose Wine Bar and Restaurant in Penn Yan. NY. Our experience at the Burnt Rose was a “wow” in terms of food, wine and service. Rose is a second level (Certified) sommelier and a trained chef. A first glance at the menu might impress someone as being a bit narrow in terms of breath of selections. Rose makes up for this impression with an exceptionally high quality of preparation and presentation. Rose has built alliances with area farmers so she can source the best/freshest ingredients for her menu items. She has also taken the time to canvass wineries in the Finger Lakes to develop a thoroughly impressive wine list emphasizing wines of the Finger Lakes. We selected the following items for dinner: warmed medley of French olives with toasted bread as appetizer, Lobster Fra Diavolo as the main dish and Coeur à la Crème for dessert. We had a Cabernet Franc (Ryan William) as our wine. The meal was outstanding in all respects. We will be certain to dine at the Burnt Rose Wine Bar and Restaurant the next time we are in...
Read moreNice location and atmosphere but expensive for the very limited menu options. At first glance the menu states they have fully inclusive gluten free options, which was not actually true. They did not have gluten free bread or starch options. I suggested tortilla chips as a backup for the dips or cheese boards which they said they cant do because they are not locally made. I was offered the dips with a spoon. (??) There needs to be another option when there is no gluten free bread or crackers in stock for customers with dietary restrictions. For someone with celiac disease this is a major let down to go out to dinner at a location that features an allergy/gluten free option menu (which is wonderful when so many still don't) and then to not have this be available, and end up with limited options like a salad, that you can...
Read moreI hesitate to write this review as when the waiter and the maître d asked “how was everything?” , we answered “OK”. Truth was it was not OK. We both had the Smoked Salmon Rillettes. The dish had good chunks of salmon but was a bit watery. That may have been my expectation at having had this dish before and both previous times the texture was much less watery and more whipped. It was also on the salty side.
The real rub was that the pour of the wine was probably the lightest we have ever had and we do travel extensively. $16 for a glass of wine isn’t out of line with fine dining but it was literally ½ the amount we were expecting.
We would go back and try other dishes as the staff and the...
