I recently visited 876 Jerk Restaurant In Monroe NY, with high expectations for authentic Jamaican cuisine but left thoroughly disappointed after ordering a small Red Peas Soup. As a true Jamaican âYarddieâ, familiar with the traditional flavors of Jamaican cooking, I can confidently say that this dish was far from authentic.
First and foremost, the soup lacked the most critical ingredient: peas. Jamaican Red Peas Soup should be rich with red kidney beans (the star of the dish), yet this version seemed to rely on canned peas hastily added to the pot. The absence of that distinct, hearty flavor from the kidney beans was glaring.
Additionally, the soup bore an unsettling resemblance to chicken soup, with a vibrant pumpkin-colored broth that lacked depth and richness. It was evident that smoked turkey was used sparingly, if at all, leaving the dish feeling flat and uninspired. There was little to no evidence of the smoked turkeyâs contribution to the flavor! And traditionally, an authentic Jamaican Red Peas Soup does not have smoked turkey in it.
Red Peas Soup is a cornerstone of Jamaican cuisine, a dish that warms the soul with its bold flavors, heartiness, and the perfect balance of herbs and spices. Itâs meant to be lovingly prepared with ample kidney beans, fresh ingredients, and authentic seasoning. Unfortunately, this soup felt rushed and careless.
For a restaurant striving to represent Jamaican food, maintaining authenticity is essential. Cutting corners or skimping on traditional ingredients not only disappoints loyal customers but risks tarnishing the reputation of your establishment.
I urge the team at 876 Jerk to revisit the traditional preparation of Red Peas Soup and ensure that their dishes reflect the rich heritage of Jamaican cuisine. Otherwise, they risk alienating the very audience they aim to serve.
Verdict: Just terrible. A disappointing attempt at a classic Jamaican staple. ** Wish I could upload a picture to display their version of Authentic...
Read moreSmall restaurant with only barstool seating (which isn't a bad thing but just be aware of that). The service was good as the order was taken fast and food came out fast. I ordered two jerk chicken sandwiches with fries and a soda for a total of about $37.
Unfortunately, the value just didn't add up. Both sandwiches had very little chicken in it to the point where I had to rip pieces of bread off from the sandwich so that I didn't have to eat just bread in some bites. Also the bread used for the bun was just your typical bread from your local supermarket. I wouldn't have minded that if it weren't for the lack of chicken I suppose.
The jerk chicken I did have tasted great and I liked how crunchy the fries were and the amount of fries given. I also liked the sauce provided. I just wish we got more chicken in the sandwich for that price. If I wasn't so hungry I would of provided a picture.
Long story short: Food taste good but amount of food for the...
