Kumo Japanese Bistro — Restaurant in Town of Orangetown

I can't really complain considering its Pearl River NY and I'm not willing to drop big bucks for great sushi. Although they give the illusion of being Japanese for the generally uninformed, I heard the wait staff conversing in Mandarin to one another. Nevertheless, anyone can make great sushi if they work at it hard enough, so my hopes were not diminished in any way based on the ethnicity of the chefs/wait staff. Whenever I read reviews of sushi restaurants online, people focus on the the fish. Considering that the history of sushi is intimately intertwined with the lacto-fermentation of rice, I was more concerned with the rice than whatever else is placed on top. I prefer the sushi rice to have the characteristic pungent vinegar smell and a bit of sweetness as it rolls down the tongue, but this rice was either prepared with no vinegar/sugar or VERY little. The fish quality was solid though, so no complaints there. All that considered, for where it is and how much it costs, I was still impressed. Any sushi restaurant on the east coast that prepares vinegared rice the traditional way will be sent out of business faster than you can say maguro, as Americans generally expect sushi to have rice on the outside, be topped with a frivolous elaborate garnishes, and won't touch it if it...

This place is fantastic. The previous owner Pen has moved on, but he left the place to his manager, who is also lovely. Fresh fish always, and the service is excellent.

They’ve never done that. -Re: the poster who says they argue over mistakes: in my experience, they were super apologetic the one time they didn’t include some spicy mayo and made it up to us handsomely.

I ordered any two tuna avocado rolls as one order and any two rolls avocado rolls as a second order. Both rolls came in one container as one order. I went back and they told me I didn't order it correctly and blame me for there mistake. The owner was rude and told me I should have known by the amount of the bill. I can't believe how rude the owner was and how he talked to a paying customer. I will never step foot in Kumo in Pearl...
