Recently I've been in search of a great bahn mi on Long Island. This was my first time visiting SUP and I was pleasantly surprised upon entering. Honestly, just on the ambiance and detail alone I knew I'd return. My dining companion and I were immediately told that we could sit anywhere we want in the front of the restaurant. There were booths situated behind the hostess' station (divided by a large partition), but I guess they're for larger parties. The tables in the front seemed to be for 1-2 people per party.
My companion and I skipped the appetizers and ordered two of their flavored fruit teas. My companion ordered Autum (peach/pineapple flavor, I believe), and I ordered Meadow (strawberry flavored). The strawberry fruit tea was okay. There were a lot of different flavors going on and I didn't know whether I liked it. I asked our server which tea is the most popular and they said Autumn and offered to swap mine, free of charge, so I accepted. Autumn was a tasty beverage.
For our entrees, I ordered a banh mi and my companion ordered the spicy basil shrimp fried rice (pepper on the side). To our surprise, the fried rice was served in a half pineapple. I told my companion that I felt like I was dining on South Beach and not Masspequa. The banh mi was really good, but the crumbly meat was a bit distracting. Much of it fell out while trying to hold/bite it, but it had a good flavor. The baguette was soft, yet crunchy and the pickled veggies were on point. I highly recommend letting the sandwhich cool off a bit before biting into it. I learned the hard way. The fried rice was delicious. I added a small amount of chili and a bit of sriracha to balance out the sweetness of the pineapple.
The staff was nice and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. I will definitely...
Read moreMy friend and I went for a leisurely stroll in search of a place to have dinner. After passing by numerous establishments, we stumbled upon a particular restaurant that piqued our interest.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a delightful ambiance that transported me back to my time in Vietnam. The decor exuded an authentic and charming appeal, and despite the small size of the restaurant, it was bustling with activity for a Sunday evening.
To quench our thirst, I ordered a dragon fruit and cucumber spicy margarita. However, it didn't quite live up to my expectations as the drink I received was missing the rim that was shown in the picture. On the other hand, my friend opted for the lychee martini, but it also failed to impress her. Luckily, we discovered a delightful surprise in the form of a refreshing strawberry tea that we both thoroughly enjoyed.
When it came to the food, the grilled sugar cane pork stole the show. Its delectable flavor left us wanting to savor every last morsel, and we couldn't help but joke that it was "lick-your-fingers" good. The dish boasted a sweet and savory profile, so it might not be to everyone's taste if they don't fancy sweet flavors. I ordered a comforting noodle soup, which although satisfying, didn't quite reach the heights of extraordinary. Meanwhile, my friend tried the wings, which were good, but the sweetness wasn't to her preference. Unfortunately, the restaurant was out of the enticing beef short ribs that we had our eyes on.
Initially, the service was attentive, but it seemed to lose its focus towards the end of the evening, perhaps due to the slowing down of the night. As a result, the ambiance also dipped slightly. Nonetheless, overall, it was a good...
Read moreA fine slightly upscale Vietnamese restaurant (compared to my general experience at similar joints). Service was absolutely on point. Everything happened quickly, but with a smile. The menu is on the fancy side. They obviously push the pho, with all other entries getting much less promotion. I was surprised that they had no bun dishes. We had the summer rolls because I always judge on them. They were generous in size, balanced between the noodles and veg. The peanut sauce was cloyingly sweet and thick, my preference is a bit thinner and more acidic. The vegetable spring rolls were fried perfectly but we're mushy inside. We all got a different pho, 3 beef and 1 chicken and the broth was Uniformly excellent, not overly dominated by spices like cinnamon. I got xiu mai(meatballs) and while the flavor was fine, they were disappointingly rubbery. They should have a chew, but this went beyond that . Another slight complaint is the amount and variety of veggies and herbs side that come with the pho, which seems to be based on the small dish it comes in. We didn't have dessert but did have coffee and both the iced and hot were exceptional and recommended. All and all a decent spot with great service and vibe but the food isn't up to the usual family owned places in Vietnamese areas like Harrisburg PA. Still, it's nice to see more Vietnamese options on LI.
I wanted to add for the benefit of the owner that the dad joke name and sophomoric 'pho king' are sad and not funny for people over 12. It's not offensive, just something I would expect from a food truck or take away, not a restaurant that tries...
