Once upon a time a great Wine & Tapas bar opened up in Massapequa, I was introduced to it by a couple of already frequent (twice even 3 times a week) patrons of this once great spot and it quickly became my new spot too. I had just moved to the area and it was nice to frequent Salumi once or twice a week, sometimes me and my fiancee, sometimes just by myself at the bar, sometimes with a group of 4 or more. I dragged anyone I could to this place as well as having hosted several large parties for birthdays and office gatherings. The food was on point, the wine selection was tremendous and their menu changed seasonally (most of the time). I set this stage because I and most of my friends frequent restaurants like this 4 out of 7 nights a week, sometimes more. We were regulars at Salumi of Massapequa.
I cannot stress enough that we WERE regulars, up until last night — when we walked into a the resturant with our extremely familiar / frequent faces at 9pm on a Tuesday night only to be treated like utter garbage from the “Front-Of- House”. We were a party of two, and treated as such. They had a large table open upfront that seats 6-10 people and 2 booths available for 4 people each, yet we were told it would be at least a 30 minute wait for a table of two by an unprofessional hostess with an attitude that made us cringe. When we asked to be seated at one of the empty booths she insisted that it is their policy to hold those tables open for “possible bigger parties". With no reservations on the books, they gave us scenarios of “what if we get a rush? We need to save those tables for the bigger parties". We sat down at the bar and asked to speak to a manager, and another waitress maybe 20 years of age came over, she was clearly not management (extremely inexperienced and flippant) who gave us the same story. The possible rush at 9pm on a Tuesday was more important to Salumi than the two paying customers sitting before them at the bar. The hypothetical parties of 4 or more wouldn't have to wait 30 minutes but the present party of 2 would have to wait at least that long.
We were NOT treated as loyal customers that easily drop between $150-$200 dollars every time we walk thru their door, NOR were we treated like a couple of adults that just wanted to enjoy a few bottles of wine after a long day with a plethora of tapas about to fill their table. We WERE treated like dollar signs, we WERE treated like maximized return and it was rudely expressed to us as such by “management”. We had never experienced this type of awful treatment at Salumi before, by the familiar and professional waitstaff they once employed. But we have noticed a decline in their front-of-the house decorum over the past few months. Salumi is now run by very young and inexperienced workers that clearly have no idea what they are doing in terms of customer service. We have been there to support this small neighborhood restaurant since day one, spreading the word and giving them as much business of our own as possible on weekly basis. But given the events of last night we are sad to say we will miss Salumi’s cheeseboards, wine & tapas, but we will never step foot in...
Read moreToo bad the staff here is horrendous! The customer service was absolutely terrible! My fiancé and I came in at 11pm they said they would serve food til 12. We sat down and our waiter jay didn't even acknowledge us. We asked him to order our drinks and meal. He forgot about our drinks. It took about about 10 mins to get a glass of water and coke when there was only 2 other customers and 4 other staff members. Our meat board arrived by another staff member. We had no utensils, no plates, no napkins. We passed by he didn't even notice. He was phone on his texting the whole time. My fiancé had to get his attention while on his phone to ask for some plates and utensils. He looked annoyed and went to grab the plates and dropped utensils on the floor picked the pick up put it back on the plate and on our table. My fiancé then got up and had to ask another staff menu for napkins. Then as our waiter passed by again we said we would like to order more food and he never came back to take our order. He kept passing us as if we didn't say anything. My fiancé made a comment to me I think this waiter is annoyed we are here, he over heard and came back to our table and screamed that he was a owner in our faces and cursed us out saying a whole bunch of nonsense getting in our face and ran back into the kitchen. Another staff member had to come and apologize for his actions. We paid our check and left! As we were in the parking lot going to our car we seen the waiter running out to come fight my fiancé. The other waiter had to hold him back and stop him! We couldn't believe it! I am in shock! And in awe of this treatment! I've never ever in my life been talked to and screamed at like that or ever seen anything like that in my life! If that's an owner who talks to a customer like that? I don't know how this place is still open!! Even If they gave me free food for life I would never go back!!! Beware of these crazy staffs...
Read moreAmazing place! I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time so when friends asked us to dinner and recommended this place I was excited! Parking on a Saturday night at 7pm was tough we had to park outside of the lot and walk a bit but no big deal. I had a few delirium which was on tap and a glass of white wine but were great. Now why we came here the food!!
Spanish Board- Plenty of meats and cheeses for four. I wish it came with a few more slices of bread though.
Grilled Octopus- yum!!!! It came with chickpeas which were tasty and crispy.
Charred cauliflower- Another hit!
Shrimp in garlic sauce- deliciousness! Luckily for us they gave us an order of bread incorrectly and then comped it. The bread was great to dip into it!
Brussel sprouts- yummy!!
All dish were great! Zero complaints! Except perhaps I wished they came with a bit more lol.
Now dessert - we shared the chocolate dip and pannacotta. Amazing especially the chocolate dip!
Overall amazing food! I read from some reviews about prices. We ate plenty and had quite a few drinks I can't tell you how much as our friends treated us as we were celebrating. I can't say if it was pricey as I barely looked at the menu and prices. Our friends love this place and ordered everything we ate.
Service-I appreciated they didn't try and kick us out we sat there for close to 4 hrs never interrupted or rushed out. Only slight negative was waiting on drinks. Throughout the night each drink took a while. We were waiting to cheers as my drink (beer) took about 25 mins to come out. Our friend reminded our waiter twice about it. I won't take a star away from this place though. I look forward to...
