Bistro 72 — Restaurant in Town of Riverhead

Me and my wife have been here for dinner while visiting the island before and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We decided to try sitting at the bar on a Saturday, looking for a hotel for my employees to stay during winter time when our contract starts again and thought having a restaurant/bar attached would be a bonus for them.

We were being helped by a tender named Jenny, who also seemed to be the manager. She was unwelcoming, and was obviously annoyed when asked simple questions. She seemed to have little knowledge about the menu and food preparation. The experience only got worse as she was excessively rude to her coworkers, you could see their demeanor change whenever they interacted with her. The wait staff seemed to be more of her personal assistants, and had to prioritize her over their own tables. Maybe this just the dynamics here in comparison to normal being a hotel restaurant. However being a business owner that cares for my employees treatment, the way she treated and talked to her employees was utterly distasteful.

Throughout the night we observed her pour excess shaken liquor into cups to take into the back, probably drinking more than many guests during our time there. We were told by other guests she is the local "drinker" and even has bottles at the bar she pours herself to drink in the open, which was shocking to hear. She praised herself throughout the night for being the "best," and would tell other staff they arent doing enough. In reality we observed her and noticed she didn't do much besides take orders and make drinks, everyone else around her did the heavy lifting.

The food was great, the place is a little dated but still nice. The bar was full of fruit flys and probably needs to be better taken care of though. The hotel would have been perfect for my employees, and could have been a great ongoing thing. However after this experience I dont think I will be going...

Took a group of 6 for drinks and appetizers last night. Loved the look and vibe of this place. In addition to the bar & seating inside, they had an enclosed outdoor seating area with overhead heaters that was awesome. Half of the enclosed heated area was set up as a lounge with plenty of cushioned seats, couches, and tables, while the other half had 4 tables for 2. They kindly put 3 of those tables together for us. So we enjoyed a couple rounds of drinks on the couches, and then moved over to the tables to eat. Afterwards we went outside to their outdoor patio which had a huge outdoor fireplace with plenty of additional chairs, couches, cushions, and BLANKETS......yes blankets which easily allowed us to enjoy the cool 40 degree weather with a few more drinks. When we finally moved inside there was a gentlemen playing the piano surrounded by more than a dozen customers on bar stools singing along and many with various tambourines and other instruments. Several customers even grabbed the microphone and sang incredible renditions of their favorite songs of days long gone. Overall I loved this place and will certainly return again someday. I took 1 star away because of our server. He simply made too many mistakes, forgot too many things we asked him to bring us, and just conducted himself in a less than professional manner. I'm hoping he just had an off night. Overall the place is great. They did adjust our bill by about 25% and today followed up with a very sincere email...

Went here for Sunday Brunch menu. First off places floor looked like it hadn’t been swept in a long time as it was littered with all sorts of dropped items under all the tables. The table we sat at was sticky and the place mats were literally falling apart. That should have been the rd flag for a mismanaged establishment and we should have left. Unfortunitly we didn’t! Place wasn’t that busy yet it took a good 7-10 minutes for a server to come by. Our breakfast cocktails came up in a timely manner. We then placed our orders from the brunch menu. We waited almost 1/2 hour for the food to arrive. Our server told us “a few minutes” several times but no food. In the meantime a couple was seated next to us and their food came out rather quickly. . At this point I got up to get a check for our drinks and leave spotting the manager I told him about the MIA food. Just at that time our server comes out with our order. Manager promises a comp so I sit down to eat. Upon examination a portion of my dish wasn’t there...oh I’ll get it. On top of it all it want cooked as requested. Out of frustration I gave up and ate what I was served. We got the check and as promised the manager had comped us with a 20% discount. However when I looked a the cocktails we had they were $3 more than stated on the menu. By this time I just wanted to get out so I paid and left.
