With the name Prime 36, I went there for the porterhouse for two and the promise of a high-end steakhouse experience. Was hoping Warwick would finally be host to a real steakhouse closer to home than chain places like Ruth's Chris or Capital Grille in Westchester or NJ. Or better yet, like the Benjamin or Peter Luger in NYC. This was nowhere near any of that. This was a middling Italian restaurant with steakhouse pricing. Let me say here that I am happy to pay $1000 for dinner for 4 if the food and service are excellent. Here's what we observed.
The steak was okay, not exceptional. It didn't seem to have been dry aged but it was at least cooked to the ordered temperature. But it was really a shame that the $140 for steak was paired with such mediocre sides. Sadly, every side was underwhelming (to put it kindly). The mac and cheese was bland and tasted more of cream than cheese. No crispy topping or bubbling cheese crust on top. The creamed spinach was watery and not particularly well seasoned (no nutmeg-tinged bechamel or even any salt or pepper). The sauteed spinach had no garlic flavor, overcooked in swimming in its own liquid. The mashers were bland and not piping hot. And, the small side dish "boats" were not even filled. Four bland, small sides.
Service was friendly and sweet, but amateurish. White glove prices with kids for servers and bussers. It was clear none had ever worked in a high end dinner house before. The meal began with some weird sauce squeeze-squirted out of a plastic condiment bottle onto a side plate and served with some super bleached white bread rolls which I guess were meant to sop it up with. No explanation was provided of what it was. Perception matters. Poured from a metal terrine or ladled out of a stoneware crock with an explanation of what the tasty mystery sauce was would have made a big difference. Though there is NO excuse for using such lousy, spongy, no-crust bread. Then, during the meal, serve from the left, clear from the right. Replace used flatware with clean flatware. Use a crumb remover to clean the linen before dessert. None of that happened. It was like service at a diner. Dining at this price point is about experience. This was NOT fine dining service.
Our friends had a pan roasted chicken and potatoes and a risotto dish which looked okay.
The redecoration of the space was very nice and the owner was there and very accommodating. But you can't eat the ambiance. Spending more than $500 for dinner for four without wine, I absolutely expect real, experienced servers, generous portions, and most of all, well-crafted cuisine. If you're a steakhouse, your sides MUST be memorable, not afterthoughts.
Wouldn't recommend it outside of stopping for a cocktail at the beautiful new bar there. A friend has invited us to join them for a birthday dinner this week, so hopefully they will have worked out some of their opening jitters. I will come back and revisit my review if the experience is...
Read moreI rarely leave reviews but being this resturaunt came highly recommended to me and was told it is as good as a "high end NYC style steak house" we decided to try them out. this was NOT my experience at all. My wife an I came here for our 14th wedding anniversary we ordered the porterhouse for two, cooked medium. The steak by itself was $140.00. The garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were extra and I had a beer my wife a Margherita. First off, when the food arrived at our table the first thing I noticed was the steak was not medium it was much more on the medium rare/rare side as I can tell by the color of the inside of the meat. I know how to cook steaks On the BBQ and often do during the warm months. But I decided not to say anything being it's my anniversary and the steak is advertised as premium meat "it should be tender and good. My wife and I both took our first bite and it was COLD in the center! COLD. I had to send it back. They tossed it assumingly under the broiler and brought it back and it was now hot but also over medium doneness and not to our liking. We ate it and again decided just to enjoy our evening. The sides were good but the steak is the star of the show and should be! for a restaurant selling high-end steaks at a $100.00 plus price point and ours again was $140.00 just for the meat they’re absolutely should be a standard for making the steak the star and honestly, I get a better steak at Texas roadhouse or Longhorn steakhouse for hell of a lot less money. The other complaint is our waiter. Everytime he came to check on us and it wasent much he smelled like he had just gone out back and smoked a cigarette. like come on man friggin gross. The total bill at the end was over $200.00 dollars and if I could leave less than one star, I absolutely would. What a disappointment on my anniversary. whatever though, my wife and I made the best of it and enjoyed the rest of...
Read moreI don’t often do review for restaurants but I had a particularly interesting experience. My husband and I had dinner here to celebrate our anniversary last night. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated by a young man who was very polite. Shorty after our female server came over and took our order. Food and drinks came out quickly as we were the only ones there at the time.
Food: The food was just okay if I’m being honest. For the price I do feel like blue point in Newburgh at the waterfront is much better.
Atmosphere: great! 10/10. I even liked the Halloween decor they set up!
Service: Service was great until the check came. We received a gift card from my father that he just purchased on Saturday. We gave it to the server along with another from of payment for the balance. When she came back she explained its balance was 150 but the gift card was for 200 written and signed by the staff there. She then explained that they don’t fill out the gift cards until it showed her the certificate. Then her story changed and she said she would fix it. I don’t know if it was a true mistake but it definitely felt like she was misleading us and trying to take advantage. I really didn’t appreciate it. She did end up fixing it but the vibe felt totally off. When I asked her who’s signed it she said she didn’t know. I find it hard to believe she didn’t know what staff member issued the gift card. I won’t...
