Steves Smokin BBQ — Restaurant in Traverse City

Stopped in for lunch with my wife and shared the 2-meat plate. The meat portions were very generous, the meat had a nice smoke flavor and was tender but was served not as hot as we'd expect. The mac and cheese, beans and Cole slaw were good and we appreciated the mac and cheese being not spicy like some BBQ places serve. We would have preferred a bit less meat and larger side portions. We also found the un-toasted "Texas toast" to be a bit odd. Suggest to either serve it toasted and buttered or maybe cold bread with a nice sweet or cinnamon whipped butter would be OK too. The 3 sauces were all good but all pretty sweet, I'd have liked a vinegar/mustard type sauce as an option. I was very excited to try this restaurant as I’ve heard many great reviews. I got take out of a 2 meat platter with pulled pork and chopped brisket. While the meat was OK, it was a little dry and I was surprised that for a bbq restaurant it didn’t come with any bbq sauce. The smoked beans were a little sweet, but I liked them, and the Mac and cheese was good, but I was shocked at how small the sides were. Also, the Texas toast was not toast and was just a plain piece of thick white bread. I grew up in the south and understand that bbq in Michigan may not meet the same standard, but was a little disappointed after spending $27 with a tip on this meal. First go of it! Ribs were super tender with great flavor but a tad bit salty. Tried all three sauces and they each had distinct delish flavors. Liked the one with jalapeño the best. Enjoyed the pulled chicken and beef brisket which were served with LARGE portions in the two meat platter. Would prefer if brisket was not pulled and served whole. The platter came with one piece(?) of Texas toast (not toasted?) and two small sides. Mac and cheese was terrific! Coleslaw was good. Wish the sides were bigger--maybe enough for two people. In turn, they could actually reduce the meat portions in the platter--just an idea.
