I usually love this place; I always get the burrito bowl. Sometimes the chicken comes cold but I’m okay with that because I can reheat at home and the other ingredients are pretty fresh. Tonight I switched it up and got the nachos which I was super excited for!! They put the chips in my dish and poured the queso over at the first station, but by the time I got to the salsa/cheese station it had been 10 minutes and my chips sat there soaking and getting soggy. I picked through the bowl and tried to find a single chip with crunch left to eat but I couldn’t and had to toss it. The chips literally melted into one soggy piece of bread along the bottom of my dish. Please train your staff to inform customers of this possibility when the line is long (which it almost always is). I can’t imagine many people enjoy their nachos on Saturday nights.

First time at Illegal Pete’s for a Friday lunch and it did not disappoint! I had the tri-tip nachos—meat grilled perfectly, massive portions, and the hot salsa packed just the right amount of heat. Loved the variety of toppings (the calabacitas with fajita veggies was a delicious combo). The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and since it was the off-season it wasn’t too busy—though I can see this place being lively on a Friday night with its two bars (upstairs and downstairs) plus patio seating. Great views of University from upstairs! Parking can be a challenge (garage in back or limited street parking), but it’s easy to reach by streetcar or on foot from campus and nearby neighborhoods. Overall: flavorful food, generous portions, friendly vibes, and a fun setting. Can’t wait to come back and try the Coors-battered fish tacos!

HOW DOES THIS PlACE ONLY HAVE A 4.2?!!!!! We visited Tucson recently from Los Angeles, and we ate at Pete’s four times. It’s that GOOD. The burrito bowls in particular. They load up your bowl with the best quality ingredients, and they don’t skimp on portions. The prices are really good for the amount of food you’re getting. And don’t get me STARTED on their $7 margarita. It was a HEAVY pour, i took three sips and was already tipsy. The service is particularly kind and friendly. The servers gave me samples of their “taco night” toppings, which I ordered next time they were so yummy. Honestly I wish they would expand to California- I think they would do really well in Westwood near UCLA or even San Diego. But for now Pete’s I will yearn for your fire burrito bowls from afar. Until we meet again! 😢

REVIEW ON DISCRIMINATION AND RACISM EXPERIENCED AT THIS LOCATION

Today 04-30-19 2:15 PM I experienced extreme discrimination. More than I have at any establishment. The bartender in question was working downstairs and had on a baseball cap with long hair underneath, wore a baseball tee and pink pinstriped shorts. My friend and I sat at the bar for 20 minutes after being told at 10 minutes we would be attended too. After 20 i called out to the bartender, twice. After the second time he says “I heard you”, I Reply “ and you just just ignored me?” And he says “yes”. After a long day of class this is the attitude I get for wanting to patronize a business? Wow completely and totally disappointed. Immediately after he took a round of shots from a white patron. Wow. His reaction made me feel like less of a human. I will never spend another dime at illegal Pete’s, I guess the name really embodies the attitude of the business owner and it’s workers: if you’re not white don’t come here. Never in my life have I been treated with such BLATANT disrespect. There are plenty of classier nicer places with BETTER happy hours such as Elliot’s on Congress, with better food. They obviously do not care about the quality of service or the need to train their employees on how to respect people OF ANY ETHNIC BACKGROUND. I will never come back. And neither will my friends.

If you are black don’t come here they don’t respect you, your money...

Absolutely bogus. There was a group of 10 of us and we came from all over the country to attend a month long training in Tucson and we wanted to visit the bar scene. We handed them our ids and they all extremely scrutinized us, which was not a big deal but they were extremely rude to us. The bouncer was like "I don't make mistakes with IDs." There's a difference between really examining an ID and being rude about it - he was interviewing us saying he wouldn't give us tags, etc. extremely unprofessional. This was almost a full race issue - Our group of 10 consisted of white, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander, and African American-black. When our black coworker came to the front with an out of state ID, the bouncer immediately took away his ID and told him to leave. We asked politely if they could call the police station to send a patrol person to examine the ID and the bouncer said we had to call, but we told him that he had literally just stole our ID. When he called the police he stepped away from us and 5 minutes later there were 2 police on bikes and 1 in a Chevy Tahoe all to examine an out of state ID. Overall, after wasting 15 minutes and extremely unprofessional staff, we got our ID left. The ultimate cherry on top was at the end the bouncer said "ok, your ID checks out." Such an unprofessional embarrassment...
