Thank goodness for Groupons! This is now my FAVORITE sushi spot in town. One or two months after they took over the previous restaurant in January of this year they put out a great Groupon. It was so tempting that we gave in despite the fact that we had never been to that restaurant before. Don't know if it was the way the building looked or the name of the previous restaurant but now we look at it in a whole different light.
This chef is the real deal. He has such a unique genius about putting just the right flavors and textures together that every bite becomes a sensual experience for your mouth. I mean it. And somehow he also manages to keep every roll and specialty sashimi more authentic than I thought might be possible in this town. It seems that besides his obvious talent to put just the right flavors together, the success that becomes "YUMM" has the most to do with his attention to the quality of each and every ingredient and how it's prepared.
I just can't say enough about how awesome the experience is at this place when you are looking for quality and authenticity, a true foodie's nirvana. Yes, it sounds like an exaggeration but since moving away from Portland years ago this is the first place that really lived up to my expectations.
If you're a fan of saba you MUST try theirs. Also the specialty sashimi plates are out of this world. They each have just one kind of fish and each kind has it's own particular complimenting touches and custom created sauce to make that fish taste fantastic. I think they have a link of him making these on a local tv show or something on their website. Just watching makes your mouth water. LOL.
I know. I've gone on long enough but if you still need some extra incentive then look for a deal on Groupon or Living Social. Bushi seems to use them on a regular basis and we always love getting...
ย ย ย Read moreFalse advertising isn't cool. I wanted to order red snapper because that's one of the more healthy fish, considering it has less mercury than tuna (if at all, I'm not an expert, i just have an avid interest in food and health), but I asked them if it's real red snapper, and found out its actually tilapia, which is a highly toxic low quality fish. SO THAT MEANS THEY LIED ON THEIR MENU! Their other options are various kinds of tuna. Imitation crab is ok I guess, not the healthiest, but not the worst. So the only healthy fish this restaurant has available is salmon that's farmed. I realize you can't hardly ever expect a restaurant to carry wild caught salmon. I know that would lower profit margins since it costs more & the consumer likely wouldn't be willing to spend more. Farmed salmon still has health benefits but it can be GMO & might be fed food that is incorrect for fish to eat, such as corn (it's not natural for farms to feed fish corn). Also for those of us who can't digest rice due to legitimate health issues, this restaurant only offers one roll without rice (rolled with a cucumber), & I had to ask them to put salmon instead of tilapia or tuna. Sashimi is another option if you want fish but not rice, but I'm not really into just getting plain old fish, sold at a high amount for little bites of food. So at this restaurant, you basically can't get full unless you are able to eat rice or whatever grains they make their noodles from. So this means they're not paleo friendly (I know I can't expect too many restaurants to even know what paleo is, let alone have more than one option, but still). Likely won't come here again, i shouldn't have had to ask whether the red...
ย ย ย Read moreGoodness, where do I start?! We walk in to the seating area and see a large family seated at a table with loud screaming children all running around the table. I have a feeling this was the family that owns the restaurant or related to them because during our dinning experience one of the women decided to breast feed right there in the restaurant but maybe not maybe this is just an acceptable practice for this restaurant?
As if this doesn't set the tone for nice ambience let me tell you about the sub par food and service. Actually, the food itself was OKAY despite the dry edamame. The sushi rolls were not cut evenly but again everything at least tasted fine. So the (first) waitress was just overall rude to us and neglected to bring several things to the table when asked such as WATER and Miso soup. We had to ask the 2nd waitress for the miso soup and we did not get it till well into receiving our sushi! Miso comes before the meal... everyone knows this and it's almost always on the house.
I will not be eating at this place again... hands down worst service for a sushi...
