Location: The restaurant in located on the North side of Tucson on River near the Campbell intersection. I was happy that they were open for lunch and that it was not too busy.
Seating: After you open the front doors there are another set of doors; however, a hostess will often open those doors, as they did for the hubby and I. We were asked if we preferred the bar, table or booth. We were taken to our preferred seating- a big, comfy booth.
The booth was big enough to fit a large group (about 5-8 people) but that was fine as there was enough room for my purse and our cell phones. We also got to decide it we wanted to sit close, next, or across from one another.
Bathrooms: Male and female bathrooms are available in the northeast side of the restaurant just off of the bar seating area. The male bathroom was clean and well stocked. Hubby had no complaints. The female bathroom was equally appropriate, clean and well stocked. No complaints here. I did not notice if there was a changing station- sorry, I forgot. :(
Customer Service: We were promptly seated and asked our seat preference. Our waitress was great considering she was attending to two additional tables. Waitress immediately took our drink order while suggesting a mango tea when she saw I was unable to decide on an alcoholic beverage or a water (hahaha). The mango tea was surprisingly delicious (unsweetened) and the hubby and I never got down to the ice as she was prompt with a new glass of our beverages. :)
She was also knowledgeable about the menu when I asked her questions about how certain foods were prepped. She also referred us to their nifty, affordable, smaller portioned lunch menu that is available Monday - Friday 11am-4pm.
Food: The chicken lettuce wraps were delicious as usual. The egg drop soup appeared to be freshly made. The beef and broccoli I ordered was equally up to par. The Chang's Spicy Chicken (the hubby's meal) was "bomb." No complaints for either of us. Our meals were paired with steamed white rice but we were offered steamed brown rice or for a nominal extra price ($1.99) fried rice.
Affordability: For two of us- two lunch specials with soup and an appetizer as well as non-water drinks was approximately $40.
Verdict: I give them 5 stars because nothing could have made it better. All staff were especially good at walking by and taking away dirty plates or my...
Read moreChain has lost it's way. Most dishes are DRY, little or no sauce, which is strange considering Changs has several different and original sauces, but they cook it all away. 10 years ago dishes were saucy and perfect over rice, now dishes are dry, and if you eat them with rice you're going to need alot of water to get them down. They've been doing this for quite some time, and you used to have to wait in line...now you can walk in anytime. The only saucy dish is the eggplant, which is delicious. Kung Pao, Mongolian, sesame, orange, dry as a bone. Szechuan (one of their best sauces) shrimp, scallops, or chicken are off the menu entirely, for that matter scallops are completely gone. They have cooked the protein in the appropriate spices, but there is no sauce. They have never been able to settle on a menu either. Most of the best dishes from the past are gone and replaced with Pad Thai, and sushi, etc. Changs is not the place for sushi, or Thai food. Stick with what you know, and just do it better. I predicted Changs would be closed in two years about a year ago. There's still another year to go, but we'll see. This is sad to say. We've been patrons since the beginning and watched it steadily decline. We used to go a couple times a week, now, a couple times a year. Remodeling (recently done), is not the answer. Branching out to Indian or Ethiopian food is not the answer. The answer is do what you used to do that created an hour long wait all day.
Edit: 3/8/23 I was contacted by customer service after the above review and had a 6 or 7 email exchange with two customer service people addressing my comments and concerns. First, let me say, these agents showed deep concern over my comments and seemed truly sincere about fixing these problems. Talk can be cheap, and action speaks louder. I waited two months to return, to allow time for a response to my constructive criticism. In the last month I've been back to Chang's 3 times. There has been a measurable improvement in the food, specifically, entries are more "saucy", and not over cooked. As the service at Chang's has always been very good, these changes have put Chang's back on my regular rotation.
I will update my rating to 4.5 stars. Now, bring back szechuan shrimp and that may be a...
Read moreUnhappy with customer service experience I had here. I paid cash for my meal and was in a large group so there was a 20% gratuity charge added and even with that I was still due to receive change. When the waiter and waitress were handing back the cards to people that paid with cards, I never received my change back. The waiter and waitress told our party to have a good rest of our day and left. I went up to them as our party left the restaurant and informed them that I never got my change back and there was a manager standing there when I told them. The waiter and waitress went to the back to try and figure out what happened to my change and after a couple minutes so did the manager seemingly to go check on them since it had already been a couple minutes and they hadn’t returned with my change. Then a couple more minutes went by and I ended up leaving without my change because the rest of my party had already left the restaurant and I didn’t want to keep them waiting. The change was around $4 that I should have gotten back. That’s why I ended up just leaving without it. This review is to also point out that I called to speak with a manager there about this experience and I was told that they were sorry for my experience and that I could come back to the restaurant to get the change. I told them that I would not do that because it is too far. Their response was “okay”. When a business does something wrong and a weak attempt to make it right is made and a customer turns it down that’s what this restaurant’s management does, is just say “okay” after a weak attempt at “making it right” was made. I won’t come back to this restaurant, first and last time thanks to this experience. Word of mouth matters too. I’ve noticed other reviews on this restaurant have been poor lately and neither management nor the owner have commented on these reviews in at least a year. That’s speaks volumes about what’s wrong with this establishment. Really poor management and the owner apparently doesn’t care. Waiter just tips himself 50% and P.F. Changs is allowing stuff like...
