Because I'm health conscious and live and work near this place, I really, really wanted to like it. I just can't, for several reasons.
Cleanliness: I actually stopped going for about a year or so because of some rotting ceiling panels that were drooping with mold, mildew and other unmentionables you don't want to be eating. I went back recently, and while these particular panels had been replaced, others were on their way to that condition. There was food splattered on the ceiling above the preparation area. Having worked in many restaurants, I can tell you that if the front of the house, the part you can see, isn't clean, the things you can't see are worse. There have been tiles piled near the entrance for 2-3 years.
Service: I don't expect anyone to lay out a welcome mat, but service is cold and unhelpful. Probably the least of your worries.
"Healthiness": This is the biggest part of why I won't be back. During my last visit, I ordered a chicken wrap. I was about halfway through it when I noticed that the chicken was that preformed, precooked, solution-soaked product a la Tyson. It's something I would have expected on a Subway sandwich or an airport salad. I just sat there looking from it to a poster directly across from where I sat that read "Eat fresh for good health." Well, I do agree with that, which was why I was confused as to what it was doing in my meal.
I glanced at the menu again as I left, where it was described as "grilled chicken." Putting sprouts and sunflower seeds on something and serving carrot juice doesn't make your restaurant healthy, and neither does deceptive advertising. I can't believe I paid $8 for that horrible...
Read moreWe had the Alfredo chicken, and Tuscan Turkey Paninis. Soup of the day, which was Chicken chili or tortilla Mediterranean chicken, and The ultimate salad. Stuffed Grape Leaves, and a Mandarin Orange Chicken Wrap.
The Paninis where nothing special. Neither was the soup; it was a little salty after eating salad. The Mediterranean chicken, and the ultimate salad were good salads. The chicken in them is not; it’s tasteless. Defiantly not grilled, I would guess it’s sous vide, or pre-cooked Sams Club stuff. The Mandarin Orange chicken wrap was the best of everything ordered. The chicken in it was as mentioned lacking, but it’s pretty good all in all. I’d like to know all the nutritional value content and not just the calories too to see how they did that. The stuffed grape leaves were served almost ice cold, they weren’t good either. It was just under $70. Was it worth it? No, I can only imagine they do ok because it’s in the yuppieville...
Read moreI like Big Al's. It's been awhile since I ate here. I had lunch here, recently. It's better than ever. So fresh! The ingredients were perfect and it was a nice portion size. I love to have salad for lunch. They have good iced tea here, too. We like the wraps, sandwiches, and salads. I noticed most everyone there was ordering smoothies with lunch. I haven't tried those, yet.
One of my favorite things about Big Al's is watching the cars driving by the intersection of Harvard and 15th Street. I enjoy listening to the music they play on the stereo, too.
Casual, fair prices, long time Tulsa favorite, locally owned restaurant. Not far from the Expo, fair grounds.
Staff is friendly and accommodating. Very good. Salad (no cheese - my preference)...
