Before the new year, I wanted to take my wife out for a nice dinner. McGill's wasn't at the top of my list, but I was unable to get reservations elsewhere for the evening, and McGill's was able to accommodate us. We arrived roughly 15 minutes early to check in for our 7:30 reservation. Unfortunately, their tablet was down, so they were doing everything old-school by writing everything down. We found out we weren't on the reservation list, but they saw my name and reservation time written on another sheet, so we were still good to go.
Around 7:40pm , we were ushered to a table. We were placed at a table by the exit to the patio. My wife had to shift to another seat at the table because there was a noticeable cold breeze coming across the wall. It was chilly. Within a few minutes, our waitress greeted us and took our drink order. We looked through the menu prior to visiting, and we already knew what we wanted for an appetizer and entrées, so she took our food order as well.
Sesame encrusted ahi tuna was the first up. The first thing you notice is the beautiful color of the ahi, followed by the nice light sear and sesame seeds. Accompanying the ahi was a portion of sliced avacado, ponzu sauce, and a small swirl of wasabi. The ahi was fresh, sliced thin yet not too thin, and had more of natural ahi flavor. When combining the ponzu and mixing, avacado or wasabi just enhanced the flavor.
My wife had the chicken picatta. The chicken was floured more than a dusting, covered in a lemon caper butter sauce on top of 2 stalks of asparagus followed by angel hair pasta. The chicken was moist and tasted great with the lemon caper butter sauce. While the pasta was cooked perfectly, the asparagus stalks were slightly undercooked. Although the sauce tasted good, my wife felt like it needed something, as did I, yet we couldn't determine what.
I went with the blue cheese cream sauce strip steak with double veggies and ditched the potatoe. When my dish arrived, I was excited. It looked delicious. Being a blue cheese fan, I loved the sauce. It wasn't overbearing and really complimented the steak. The veggies were fresh and cooked tender yet not too tender. I did have our waitress grind fresh black pepper over everything. The steak had a great sear with a slightly crispy crust. Personally, the steak was cooked just a hair over medium rare but not so much to complain. I was disappointed that one side of the strip had a decent amount of fat and gristle. Looking at the dish as a whole, I was happy. Next time I visit, I'll be getting the ribeye and add the blue cheese cream sauce.
Overall, the hostess did a great job getting us a table after an oversight. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. Food arrived in a reasonable time and was hot. Flavors were good, especially the blue cheese cream sauce. The place was nice, upscale without being considered fine dining. Looking across the room, you'll see that most people are dressed up, some very fancy, while others were more casual. The dining room was fairly noisy when they were busy. If you're looking for a good meal in an upscale casual environment, then this place fits the bill at a fair price. Date night at a romantic, more of an intimate dining experience, then I would...

My wife and I wanted to go somewhere special for our first anniversary, and McGill's was one of the places that I wanted to try, so we gave it a shot...it was a mistake.
Service: We arrived to the restaurant just to find less than 20 parking spaces for an entire restaurant ( - ). Had to park at bank, next to the restaurant. We were seated right away, as there were only a few tables with guests ( + ). Our server was (Neal) very courteous and greeted us with a smile ( + ). He mentioned their house specials for the night. Over all service experience: ( + + - )
Food: When we were seated, we wanted to order some alcoholic beverages but to our surprise, they only had a list of wines and NO menu for mixed drinks. ( - ). How are you going to have a full bar, with no menu of the drinks that you offer??? Once we ordered, bread (warm) and butter (salted) were provided while we waited. For such a restaurant, we have expected to have a more unique "appetizer" if you want to call it. ( - ). To our surprise, food arrived pretty fast ( + ). My wife ordered Salmon Filet and I got Kansas City Steak. Salmon was grilled to perfection and a house special sauce from cucumbers came with fish ( + ). Steamed vegetables (came as a side) were not seasoned and bland ( - ). All of the flavor came from lemon that was squeezed onto the plate. My plate looked delicious, but that all it was: pleasing to the eye. I have ordered my steak medium (pink inside). I took a first bite and was amazed how GROSS it was. It was nothing but a good 1/2'' of fat seasoned with pepper! ( - ). When I cut another piece off, it was like cutting rubber ( - ). My steak knife had a tough time cutting it. It was completely raw inside, when I ordered medium ( - ). Had to send it back. A blue cheese sauce came with my meal (for extra $$$, which was not mentioned), and it was that sauce that made my steak tolerable. I had ordered 12 oz steak, out of which 4-5 oz ended up being pure fat ( - ). Due to the amount of fat on my meat, I thought it was a pork-chop, yet I was reassured that it was beef. I had better steak from Applebees and it is not an exaggeration! Veggies were without any seasoning and bland ( - ). We had one alcohol drink, and I have to say, this was the worst tasting Margarita that we had, which arrived in a regular drinking glass. It had too much ice, which made that drink water-downed in less than 5 minutes. Over all food experience: ( + + - - - - - - - - - )
Over all experience for McGee's was very disappointing!!! For the two meals and a drink it was $80+. This place is ridiculously overpriced! This was our first AND last...
Read moreI have enjoyed McGill’s to go service multiple times in my life but after tonight , they will never be bothered with my patronage. I called to make a to go order as I have multiple times on Friday nights for ages. After a lengthy moment of being placed on hold , I was told that because their main dining room was busy, they would not be taking to go orders. Let me be perfectly clear. You either offer to go service or you don’t. You don’t get to choose when you turn it on or off. You either appreciate the to go business or you don’t. We are unable to eat in the dining room at times and look forward to meals to go when that happens. I called back to speak to someone about this as this glaring inconsistency in service offerings needed to be addressed. They gave me David. He is the General Manager and really missed the mark .His handling of my 2nd call and the owners refusal to talk to me is what ultimately led to this review as their actions or lack there of to be held accountable is too much to go unsaid. At some point David talked to the owner. He came back on the phone saying that he and I quote “I don’t want to take your to order but will anyway…” How dare you David! You and the owner who hid behind you instead of taking heat for their decision need to know that they are literally surrounded by 5-6 steakhouses that are 100% accepting of to go orders at all times. You insulted me twice in one night. I am beyond disappointed in the actions that occurred tonight .Heads up to all patrons that this experience at McGills proves where they rate the priority of their to go service and customers who might need service at a time not conducive to McGills liking. I have never felt like a second rate class of customer in my life until trying to eat at McGills To Go tonight. PS. Ruth Chris made a great to go meal tonight and I could really tell they where appreciative even though they were actually busier than McGills. I’ll probably give Mahogany’s To Go a shot...
