I am completely beside myself with what happened in this Dairy Queen tonight. I took my elderly mother there for some ice cream. My mother does not hear that well and moves a little slow. There’s a particular employee that has developed quite a reputation with my family and neighbors as being the “tall, rude guy at the Dairy Queen.” Tonight, was no different than any other. As my mother stood in line waiting her turn and reading the menu, the employee yells from across the counter “ I can help you here.” My mother slowly begins to make her way over to the register. With his typical rude fashion, the employee asks,” what do you want?” I can see in my mothers face that she was taken back by his tone and choice of words. As a quiet, elderly lady, she did not complain about his attitude and tone.
She places her order and the employee begins to fill it. There were about five other people in the store at the time and it was a bit loud. The employee continues to yell over at my mother asking if she wants a lid. As she cannot hear well she did not respond. He becomes visibly irritated and begins to yell even louder. His co-workers even turn to look at him as they were obviously a bit taken back as well. My mother becomes embarrassed, then she responded and said “no thank you.”
At this point, I am upset about how this person spoke to my elderly mother. He looks at me and says, “ is that it?” as he begins to ring the register. I told him “no” and that I was still looking at the menu. He repeated the question,” is that it?” In his rude tone. I responded firmly and said “can you give me a minute?” He begins to roll his eyes. I place my order and my mother looks at the boy and says” I think you should learn to work on your customer service skills.“ The boy ignores her and walks away to fill my order. As he gave me my order and gives me my total, I repeated my mothers words for her by saying, “we think you need to work on your customer service skills.“ He muttered something under his mask that I could not make out. I asked him what he said, and he replied loudly, “yeah I’ll do that, have a good night,” in an extremely sarcastic tone and walked away from the both of us and proceeds to take the next order. We did not want to create a scene so we walked out and we asked another employee for the name of the manager.
I worked in this exact Dairy Queen over three decades ago. The manager at that time made sure that customer service, cleanliness and respect for your coworkers was priority. It’s sad to see how work ethic has degraded and entitlement of some of our young has risen. I can’t believe how this employee spoke to my mother, how disrespectful and entitled he seemed. We will not be going back....
