I just love this little kept secret in Des Moines. For me it is my favorite place to go to start my day, have some coffee and a nice large serving of home cooked food! Though I don’t personally know the owners or staff they are always there with a friendly smile and I feel like I’m part of the family when I’m there. I almost was hesitant to write this glowing review because I also like the fact that not everyone knows about the place! I get to treat many local people to a place where they have never been before. Sometimes I just go there for a hearty breakfast and coffee alone and the diner style lunch counter allows for some great conversation when dining alone! The other 3 secrets I hate sharing with everyone…
Tucked away in a small nondescript strip mall is this small neighborhood diner where seniors seem to come and order their standard breakfast. The entrees are your typical well portioned standard order comfort foods with reasonable prices. What caught my attention was a small handprinted sign on the door explaining the extra charge of .50 cents per egg due to high egg prices - I read about this and now I see it— at least it is an add on and can be taken away when the inflationary rates for eggs go down if that is their choice. I ordered the full order of biscuits and gravy with a side order of bacon with enough left over for dinner. The rich gravy was creamy with a plethora of small chunks of sausage, but the biscuits not as fluffy (Somewhat flat-4 biscuits). The bacon was a little over cooked, for my taste, but each piece had good flavor. The food was well seasoned. The inside decor was well worn with a homey atmosphere served by a wait staff that seemed to enjoy serving up conversation with some of their regulars— this reminds of the neighbors that enter Waveland Cafe on Polk similar set up with a delightful...
Read moreSo the first two times we visited here the past few weeks the food was fresh and excellent. Our last two visits the food quality declined dramatically. We have come for breakfast on Thursday or Friday morning. Our last two visits the hash browns were old and dry, the bacon must have been cooked a long time before serving it was very dry, the hash browns were not fresh and bright. Geez what happened. The over easy eggs seemed to be sitting for a while. The reason we kept coming is the first two experiences were impressive. What happened?…. The salt and pepper shakers do not look they have been cleaned out in a long time. I mean we want to come once a week but….. I would prefer to wait 10-15 minutes like we had in the past to get hot fresh food. I hope someone addresses this. Matter of fact we give it one more try and I’ll request fresh made …. If it’s not we will find somewhere else to go. I don’t want anything other than someone to review this and hopefully address the...
