We visited Valdez at the very end of the summer season and the town had very few visitors in evidence. Our campground owner recommended the food trucks in the area and a couple of sticks-and-bricks restaurants. Because the whole time we were in Valdez was damp, chilly, and rainy, we wanted to eat lunch in a warm, dry place. We had already eaten at the recommended restaurants and did not want to repeat our visits or eat outside at the food trucks in the rain and chilly temps. So we did a dumb thing and walked into Mike’s Palace. There was one guy at the bar and no other patrons. The hostess/ server was friendly and attentive. The food was terrible. My husband ordered the day’s special: fish (cod) and chips and I ordered a cheese burger and fries. His lunch special cost $23 and my burger was around $20. What he got was 3 preformed and frozen fish cakes (remember Gorton’s from the box during your childhood?) and fries. I received a burger (think: the value packs of pre-formed burgers from a discount grocery store) with 2 squares of processed cheese food riding on top. Eating out is very expensive in Alaska, but we felt this meal really was at the bottom of the barrel for quality and flavor based on what we spent. The atmosphere made the whole experience worse. The dining room was paneled in dark wood, the seating was old, as was the carpeting underneath. The 1970’s disco music tract playing in the background was the icing on the cake for a really unpleasant...
Read moreMike's Palace is a statewide favorite eatery! A must visit destination when in Valdez! Well worth the (very Inexpensive) price!!! Folks travel from as far as Kentucky and West Virginia, and as near as across the street just to have the honor of dining at the one and only, world famous, Mike's Pizza Palace Extraordinaire (Rights Reserved).
Just read this fine fellow's outstanding review of such an incredible establishment.
"Thoroughly impressed I must say. Absolutely the best frozen pizza I have had in at least a year, par none. It was so well presented in fact, that one might have almost mistaken it for a handmade pie. I was given an entire nutritious meal for the very low price of a mere 25 USD. Each piece of pizza was as thick as the end of my pinky finger! Including the crust and toppings! I graciously received two whole pepperoni slices on each slice of pizza along with at least two olive slices!! And this indubitably was more than enough compensation for the scarcity of other toppings due to the current famine and drought in our country. If you ask me, my conscience is almost troubled by the fact that I got quite the upper hand on that business transaction. I say they should double the price they charge for their provender. But such is life."

Read moreCame in for dinner and don't know that I've ever been so disappointed with a restaurant. I ordered one of their specials, the chimichanga, and don't know that I've ever had worse tasting food in my entire life. The chimichanga was just filled with a little bit of cheese and chunks of unseasoned roast. That is NOT a chimichanga. Furthermore, the guacamole was nothing more than Wholly Gaucamole, and their salsa had an extremely bitter, rotten aftertaste.
When I raised my concern with the server, she told me I'd still be charged for the item because it's not her fault I didn't like the food, and, ultimately, nothing was actually wrong with it. Considering I ordered a chimichanga and got something nothing like it that tasted horrible, I would say it's their fault and not mine.
I ordered quesadillas as a different entree (after one bite of the chimichanga, I couldn't eat anymore). I should have learned my lesson about ordering Mexican food from them. The quesadillas were mediocre at best. Once again, the meat was completely unseasoned and had pretty much no flavor whatsoever.
Needless to say, I will never be back here and would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. The other four people in my party were also very unimpressed with their meals. If I could give them 0...
