Every culture has it's soul food. You know what I'm talking about. That lip-smacking food that's definitely home cooked. So wonderfully awesome that you can eat several helpings of it in one sitting. About an hour after you gobble it down, you just wanna get your sleep on. And once you've had your fix, you don't want it for some time. But when the craving hits back, it hits back HARD. In my opinion, the food of my ethnicity... pretty much all of it is soul food. Savory, thick, fat, carb-loaded goodness. The stuff Mayo Clinic nightmares are made of, if done in an overabundance.
Andrea's has been a Vallejo staple for a few years now. Not sure HOW long it's been open, but it was definitely there when I was 12. I know this as my family has been going there for years. And what do they serve up here?... Wait, are you seriously asking that? This far into the review. Scroll up!... Okay, if you were too lazy to scroll back up or read any of other reviews... Heck, if you totally somehow bypassed the establishment summary at the top of the page... Then here's your answer: Filipino food. The serve filipino food. And lots of it. They got your staples here: lumpia, adobe, kare kare, lechon kawali, lechon paksi, caldareta, ect, ect. If you like or love filipino food, you know what you're getting into here.
Quality of the food? Probably one of the best joints in the city for filipino food. If you're not used to filipino food, then this stuff will blow you away/out of your mind/out of your pants (if you're that way.) I think this place edges out DJ Bibinkahan and Goldilocks (which no longer exists in Vallejo, strangely enough.) It's not as mind-blowing to me as it was when I was younger, but when I need my fix, I know where to turn to. It feels kinda ghetto-y inside and on hot days it's good to remember that this place doesn't have A/C. Also, food tends to have sat there for awhile if your thinking of coming in during after lunch hours. Though that's the case with most filipino food joints. Let the buyer beware and all that proverbial mumbo jumbo.
Good overall, here at Andrea's. Not wonderful, but good to have every...
Read moreOff a side street and in the back means hole in the wall applies. The building is from the sixties and it shows. Once you are inside and catch sight of the hot table filled to the brim with yum all apprehension should evaporate. This place is delicious! I had chicken and ginger soup. The stock was well seasoned and the bite of ginger was strong. There were huge chunks of shredded, boiled ginger root floating in it. I personally chewed some pieces at the end of my meal and the flavor was amazing. The whole chicken is cut and boiled so be prepared if you don't like marrow. Yippy can't escape it. Just how I like it. Sweet staff. Let us others go ahead of you don't know what you want. There can be a rush after church on Sunday's....
Read moreI lucked out with a friend (who works there part time) to help me out with my choices in this hidden gem. Tucked into a corner, you might not expect to find this little restaurant or the noms inside. The staff-owners, cooks, etc, were all very friendly and explained what was in each dish. I have some food allergies so exploring new foods is scary sometimes, but this was a great experience! Give them a try! Foodies will love it- for the food. Caution- no public restroom. Cafeteria style dining. Very little decor.
The lumpia!!!!!! Handmade on site (I got a quick tour of the kitchen) and even still really good as leftovers.
Omg the fried banana was...
