Nearly 30 years ago, before I met my wife, I visited Peking Garden OFTEN. My wife had her own preferred Chinese restaurant, guess where I haven't been in nearly 30 years.... I returned recently.
Obviously it's not the exact same as it was, way back when, but it is very good. Sadly, for me, they have changed their szechuan beef recipe. It's ok, but not for me. Has a sweetness I don't care for.
On the other hand, their hot and Sour Soup is EXCELLENT!! Most of the "hot" comes from the coarse ground black pepper while most of the "sour" comes from lemon juice. The vinegar flavor is mild. I'm not usually a fan of hot and sour soup, I will be having more. SOON. (I didn't order the soup. It was a free appetizer or came with another item I ordered. Not sure which. I ordered take out, didn't notice the soup til I got home. So happy it was there!) My wife would have absolutely LOVED it.
The Peking Garden fried rice is AMAZING! Every Chinese restaurant has it's own "house rice". They all have pretty much the same stuff in them: rice (SURPRISE), chicken, pork, shrimp (not always), egg, peas, and carrots. The seasoning on the rice is wonderfully understated and they add bean sprouts. The sprouts give a delicious fresh crunch that makes their house rice PERFECT!!
I must say, I also enjoyed the Kung Pao Shrimp. The sauce was closer to what I expected the szechuan beef to taste like. The shrimp is breaded, tail on. Very good.
Will DEFINITELY return, if only for a large Hot and Sour Soup and the Peking...
Read moreFrom NY so if your an East Coaster, you know you can rely on my opinion. I got the "General Tso Chicken", "Lo Mein Noodles", and some "Crab Puffs". The Crab Puffs tasted like they were fried in Bacon Fat. Reminded me of that abomination called "The Silver Dragon". This is also one of those Chinese places that mixes up Lo Mein and Chow Mein. So make sure your getting what you want. So when I ordered Lo Mein I actually got Chow Mein. Which was what I wanted. Its bland, wet, and to soft. You can tell the pan wasn't hot enough to give it that "Chinese" flavor. The General Tso was ok I guess. A little on the sweet side, but not bad. However the chicken pieces were so small I could barely feel them, way to much coating. Also they were soft, had absolutely no crisp to it what so ever. The portions are small and prices on line are wrong. The General Tso was 9.50, not 6$. The size is that of a normal Chinese take out carton about 3'x3'x4'. If I'm gonna pay 10$ for General Tso I better get my pie tin, not a tissue box!!! The food is REALLY basic and gave me mixed feelings when eating it. I didn't hate it or like it. It was odd, probably hated it more than liked. For the money its NOT worth it, your better off with Panda actually. Even though their Chow Mein is god awful, the price fits the taste. They are about equal as far as flavor goes, but it comes down to price. The texture of Panda's Orange Chicken is...
Read moreI’ve been coming to this place since I was little and have had the pleasure of watching the owner’s kids grow up alongside me and my sibling. The oldest daughter or the mom usually serves you and I believe the dad is cooking in the kitchen. They have a very authentic cuisine and feel to their restaurant, and are very nice. They would always remember us when we came in. Since COVID, we haven’t been in person to their restaurant but have ordered online for delivery and it is just as good as it was 10 years ago. This is the only authentic Chinese restaurant I trust in Vancouver and we don’t have a reason to try and find another good one. The portions are always bigger than expected and their sweet and sour sauce is my favorite. When you order delivery you get a massive bowl of it that you can even save for...
