I hate to modify a review on a place I've loved & have been coming to for years, but I've been unhappy with the food here for a while. It's hit & miss as to whether or not your deep fried fish will be crispy & freshly cooked or served from a warmer. I usually order the Alaskan Cod & chips & lately, it's served from the warmer, tonight included. Apparently, they do this when they're busy, fry up a big batch & keep it warm in the warmer. But the difference in texture & quality of food is noticeable. The breading, instead of being crispy, is chewy & soggy, the fish chewy & dry instead of flaky & tender. This meal costs $24.00! Too much for a warmed over meal. The cole slaw also looks old & lacks flavor. The fries were good & hot. But the rest of the meal, meh. The quality of food sadly has gone downhill at Andrias & I'm kind of sick of driving all the way down here, looking forward to a good meal & being disappointed. See my old review below as to my former impression of Andrias food.
Previous review from a year ago: Classic fish & chips. Last time I had fish & chips this good was in London. Best is cod & chips, tender & flaky. Their standard fish & chips is shark I believe, a texture more like chicken but I find it too chewy. Shrimp & chips is excellent too. If you don't like deep fried & breaded they also have grilled fish. Try a cup of clam chowder, the best on the California coast (I've sampled it from here to Crescent City). If chips aren't your thing you can get a big serving of coleslaw instead. Outdoor & indoor seating. Bring a jacket. Have a nice after dinner walk along the...
Read moreI was told the place was famous and there is always a line to enter and order, but it did not appeal to us. If you like deep fried food, this is your place.
The clam chowder was more like a slurry with tiny bits of something; hopefully they were clams. I prefer the clam chowders with chunks of potatoes and clam pieces that are recognizable. We had clam chowder across the parking lot at Brophy Bros and thought it tasted better.
The large garden salad had only one quarter of a tomato slice and only 3 or 4 cucumber slices. The dressings were from Ken's in plastic to-go pouches. The dressings tasted fine.
They do not give refills on soft drinks. Our iced tea had an unusual color, but tasted fine.
The tables were plain folding tables with torn and worn plastic tablecloths.
The prices seem high for deep fried food with low quality tables and chairs. The customer also orders at the counter and picks up the order when it is ready.
Our price was less than $20/person because we shared a large bowl of clam chowder and a green salad. If you don't share, the price will be closer to more than $30/person for food, drink, and tax. The portions are large and we saw many people not eating half of their order. Sharing is recommended unless you want to take food home. It did not seem like many people were taking it home though. We assumed because deep fried doesn't usually taste that good the next day.
The onion rings looked delicious, but we didn't order because of weight consciousness. Overall, the place and food just wasn't...
Read moreMy wife and I like this place. I'm not typically a seafood kinda guy here as a native Venturan. I only really eat seafood when in Hawaii, which is quite often because it's so fresh. But if not at Snapper Jack's that I really like we go to Andria's occasionally. I always order the fish and chips (cod). Unfortunately, the last couple of visits, my fish and chips, were soggy, almost gummy, not crisp, deep-fried, and cold, not even warm. I substituted the chips (fries) for the onion rings, and they were ok. The worker's were taking their breaks and having something to eat at the table next to us. I think that's really cool and love to mingle with the people who make the gears turn for the owner. Unfortunately, my order, I assume, was under the heat lights waiting behind the counter and not fresh out of the fryer. Soggy cold fish and chips isn't anything I would come back for. However, I will try again because this was only the first time Andria's let me down, and my wife's clam chowder was really good, she said. I will try again, and if all is good, I will give a five-star review. As a business owner myself, I get it. Sometimes things happen, but that doesn't mean it's the norm, and Andria's has always been pretty good until this experience. Much love and Mahalo keep trying it's really hard in this current environment were...
