SGD DUBU SO GONG DONG TOFU & KOREAN BBQ — Restaurant in Vernon Hills

This is an addendum to first writing my review. I have now experienced many visits to SGD and has become one of my favorite Korean restaurants. The food is consistent and delicious. The staff are friendly and attentive, unlike most other Korean places. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of the Korean restaurants I visit, it’s just mostly, take order, put food down, put check down, period. At SGD, even a busboy stops at your table to ask if you need something more. This was my first visit to So Gong Dong, but it won’t be my last. The atmosphere is modern and light with high ceiling, which might make it a little noisier. There is plenty of room between tables and other than a hard wood settee it is comfortable. Maybe because it’s new there seems too be a large staff. My waiter was very pleasant and helpful. Let’s get to the food. I’ve been enjoying Korean food for many many years and I’m a former chef. I ordered the Soon Du Bu and enjoyed it immensely. They serve a raw egg on the side to crack and add to my dish. There were five side dishes and the kimchee is made there fresh daily. The waiter brought me a second side of Kimchee without asking. He saw that I was really enjoying it. I might have been the only non Korean here for lunch and I will be back to try more of their dishes. Look at the pictures and the two videos. I have ordered pork kimchi jjigae which I get all the time from different restaurants and home made but this was far from authentic Korean food the kimchi itself didn’t taste like anything and the pork is usually in small chunks but they had thin slices which i though was beef when i told one of the servers which they never came to the table and checked up on us i had to call out for their attention after my partner finished his food and she said she was going to take it off the tab then came back to inspect the food and explained since I didn’t like the food and this is pork they still have to charge me this will be the last time I’m coming here nobody came to refill drinks or even ask how the food was once not worth coming here but the...

So happy SGD decided to open another restaurant in Vernon Hills!

I went half hour after they opened on a Saturday. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We ordered Pork Bulgogi Bento, Seafood Soondubu and Seafood Pancake.

Side dishes came out very quick. I love their cucumbers, fish cakes and kimchi. Our waiter was also very quick to refill any side dishes for us.

If you have been to other SGD locations, the quality of their soup is the same. Good broth and fresh ingredients.

I will probably skip ordering seafood pancake next time. I have had better. It costs about the same price as their soup.
