I consider myself as having a sophisticated palate when it comes to Thai and Japanese cuisine, having lived in NYC where I had a lot of experience of very good Thai and Japanese restaurants, and where I had acquaintance with one of the very best sushi chefs in the US.
Sumo House has the very best pad thai in Vero Beach, having a decent balance of sweet and sour with a good combination of textures from rice noodles that are not overcooked, crunchy mung beans and ground peanuts. This is in comparison to all the other Vero Beach restaurants I tried which all served pad thai that was mushy, in both texture and flavor, and almost sickenly sweet.
The Thai spring roll was also good, but I was disappointed that they served it with a chinese style sweet and sour sauce rather than the traditional Thai nam jim dipping sauce
I would not recommend the sushi which I found to be pretty far off from what I would consider as being good. But, this is my opinion of all the "sushi restaurants" in Vero Beach. I will spare the details of what makes for good sushi, only to say that I have rarely found a non-Japanese-owned establishment that can prepare good sushi, and many of them have questionable sources and handling practices of their sushi-grade fish. I don't eat sushi...
Read moreThis is a Japanese/Thai restaurant. The offerings are many and different, of course, than a Chinese restaurant. They have a lunch and dinner menu. They close down at 2:45 and reopen at I believe, 4:00 pm for dinner. You might want to double check those times. The large won ton soup is a meal in itself and delicious. Their side salad is minimal, with just lettuce, carrots (and maybe something else, I forget now). My point in mentioning the salad, is their special dressing. It makes the salad enjoyable and delicious. We purchased a container to go, and I believe you might want to bring some home, also. Container was $5. Their chicken satay was a little bland but the 2 dips that come with it, really liven it up. The dips are a peanut sauce and a Thai spicy offering(cucumbers, red pepper, onions and yes more of that special dressing, but in a more liquified form. This dip in particular, was also delicious. The dining area is already set up with booth partitions that allow for privacy and social distancing. Bring a sweater, as it was very cold in there. Will return often, if not only to purchase a container of their salad dressing. Servers very attentive and willing to explain any of...
Read moreFor years this has been my number one sushi spot. No one else in town has a spicy tuna salad that even comes close. However, today I was pretty disappointed when my coworker and I went there for lunch. I love the spicy tuna salad but the last few times and today it was sooo dry.... If the price of the item keeps going up why are you skimping on something like dressing? Also I get that they always close at 3 but today we got there at 2:15pm and 45 minutes is plenty of time for a couple salads and a sushi roll that we split but I have never felt so rushed. Literally at 15 minutes til while we were still eating the server is asking us to pass her the soy sauces so she can refill them, even though we were still using them. And at 2:56pm before I can even get up from the table another server comes between my friend and I and starts clearing off the table and wiping everything down..... They made it beyond obvious that they wanted us to leave... And we weren't even the last ones there. I have plenty of experience as a server so I'm usually an over-tipper and try to be understanding but today was unacceptable. I will have to find a new sushi...
