Ume Grill Express — Restaurant in Vero Beach

After driving by this location several times, I didn't quite understand what was happening here. Don't be fooled by looks, this place is a purveyor of top notch, freshly made and delicious Japanese food. A very small footprint yields a ton of great food. The staff guided me thru many options but I had my heart set on shrimp fried rice. A little more expensive than the local Chinese food places but well worth it. The owner magically appeared with boxes and such related to her work here. I said hello and we chatted while my order was prepared. Maybe after reading all the fantastic reviews is what made me disappointed. But I feel like they warmed everything up in the microwave. I had an egg roll that was barely warm... when you're normally burning your mouth. Same with the dumplings, they were barely warm and on one side they were cold. My poke bowl was mediocre, the rice was cold, I got three paper thin slices of cucumber, barely any avocado, the fish was very fresh and delicious but not enough sauce on top. I have been an Oniku patron for many years but took a leap recently to try something new. The food was extremely disappointing. I got three hibachi meals. I got a steak and and chicken, steak and shrimp, and shrimp hibachi entrees. I got noodles with one of them and fried rice with the other two. The meal came out to $67. I felt that was pretty expensive. I asked for the steak medium rare it came out well done. It wasn’t bad just over done. This was a trend with all of the entrees.
