From a business standpoint, Captain Georges does not put money in my pockets. We, as consumers put money into Captain Georges pockets. Consumers are the reason that this restaurant stays open.
I can’t recall her name but I do remember that she was a White woman whose voice sounded around my age (33) but whose face appeared to be about 50 years old with thin-ish hair, flaccid skin etc… I believe it was Tiffany.
What disgusts me, is how over the past 15 years of this “managers” career with Captain Georges there has been a substantial amount of dissatisfaction voiced by customers against her. Just by briefly scrolling through the lowest reviews on Google, I’ve seen at least 5 complaints regarding her disrespectful and rude customer service over the years - and that doesn’t even count the complaints that were called in. Yet she still has a job??
Friday, March 15th around 6:45 PM my family and I arrived at this location. After getting close to the end of our visit, I began noticing several inaccuracies on my bill. One of them being how I was charged an adult price for a 12 year old and the other being charged for a child that did not eat because of his dislike for seafood. I called Angela, my waitress to the table, explained where she messed up and after she stood in front of me dumbfounded for a few moments she walked away without saying a word.
A couple minutes later a short, Black male manager arrives and confirms the information that I literally just told Angela and walks away. Seconds after, Tiffany arrives and says unless I have a school ID therefore they cannot honor the child's price for my daughter. My child is homeschooled and furthermore even if she were in school, what parent carries a middle school ID in their wallet?? I have MY ID in my wallet. Of course I was offended and upset so I told her that what she will not do is tell me that my child is an adult.
I was charged an automatic gratuity of 15% when there were only 7 people that dined. The policy with Captain George’s clearly states that the gratuity doesn’t go into effect unless there are 8 people that are dining. This was verified by the tall, White male manager who checked the cameras and adjusted my bill due to Angela’s incompetence.
Let it be understood that I had no desire to scam, cheat or lie to save myself a measly $25. I arrived at the restaurant with over ten times that amount, therefore money was never an issue. Being a young Black mother with small children means I’m automatically going to be assumed to be argumentative and aggressive with deceptive intentions…typical stereotyping at its finest.
Upon our arrival to the restaurant, Angela was attentive and friendly with a smile on her face , urgently removing any old dishes and shell buckets. However, after I pointed out the discrepancy of my bill to Angela and argued with Tiffany, she blatantly ignored me. This "waitress" did not arrive to my table to clear any old food, refill drinks or ask if there was anything we needed. This can also be verified by checking the security camera. At about 9:20 she approached my table to grab a few plates and advise of the buffets last calling. Due to her negligence or as a form of retaliation since I pushed back on being over-charged, my children and I left the crowded and dirty dining table thirsty.
I was provided the number to speak to Megan from corporate and after careful consideration, I’ve decided against it. It’s pointless. I want nothing from Captain George’s, not an apology, a credit and certainly not a refund. This company has made it clear that unprofessionalism is the standard amongst their staff.
In sum, the attitude of your employees directly reflect the integrity of your company. I have been a faithful customer of Captain Georges for so long that I fondly remember visiting the Hampton,VA location as a child with my parents. Never would I have imagined to have a $2 McDonalds experience from bottom of the barrel employees at one of the most prestigious seafood restaurants in the...
Read moreI have been coming to this restaurant for over 10 yrs...I had not been here for atleast 4-5 years. One of my fav restaurants ever...in the past and in memories. it is not what it once was. I recently went on a Wed night with my family around 5pm. Good choice, not too crowded. Greeted nicely, but sat in a dark, empty,, tight part of the restaurant. Next, not too long after another family was sat literally right across from us. Why? Excited to bring my kids full circle to my fav place in Va Bch. The food bars were pristine per usual. Lots of staff around. Plates with food on them on the in the cue. They were kind about taking them. Cutting to the chase. Most things were salty even things that were "steamed": large clams, small clams, shrimp, Alaskan snow crabs, fried scallops. Most things were dry and overcooked: mussels, clams, Alaskan snow crab legs (clusters and claws). Norfolk special had big scallops but again salty. Fried fish to perfection....salty. She crab soup tasted like condensed milk or something..not good. Hit or miss with the crab legs. Some were juicy but salty...most were dry and salty. No good cracking of the shell like it should be. Meat stuck to inside and shriveled. Mahi mahi...dry and hard. Salmon dry and hard. Disappointed! Best items: fried oysters, marinated steak, cold peel and eat shrimp, seafood salad from cold bar, yeast rolls. Kids like the mac and cheese. Broccoli overcooked. Green beans greasy. Fried chicken beautiful, but had no seasoning. Bbq chicken qing dings overcooked. Collard greens tender not salty but too much vinegar! The 2 dessert bar lines were cute. Best: baklava and strawberry shortcake. The cookies looked boxed, the icing on the carrot cake was not cream cheese but canned frosting, the key lime cake freakish green color and the flavor was not fresh key limes, but extract. The banana pudding looked curdled. How? The pudding congealed not creamy. The Reese's cake had an aftertaste. The crust on the apple pie/crisp and the peach pie/crisp undercooked and soggy.
The kids cup was cheap clear plastic with ill fitting top. Too flimsy for kids. No cute captain George kids cup. The wait staff was fine. Timely. Checked in but not hovering. But when I told them at the end of the meal, that everything was salty..."sorry we have different chefs every night." That's it. For a meal for 4 (2 were children) of almost $200 prior to tip, I expect more and disappointment isn't enough to describe that night. Saw a manager mostly at the front desk of an empty restaurant. Usually they walk around and personally check on people. What happened to the quality at Captain George's? What happened to the customer service? Is there no QC check anymore? Did kitchen staff not...
Read moreMy parents were in town for the weekend and I wanted to try out a new restaurant. I’ve heard great things about Captain George’s so that’s what we chose. To be honest, I had low expectation; It being a seafood buffet and all.
As soon as I walked in, I was already enamored. Upon entry, you are met with a beautifully set up backdrop for fall photos with your family. You walk down the long hallway into the restaurant and are greeted by friendly hostesses that immediately take you to your table. Right away, I noticed the ambience and how beautifully decorated this place was. Not only that, it didn’t smell too much like fish! Not sure how they accomplished that, but kuddos to you! We sat in the very back in a quiet area and we had a waitress named Jocelyn who was training. She had several servers by her side the back up and make sure that everything went off without a hitch. Watching all of them work as a team was beautiful. I spent many years as a waitress across the United States, and I can tell you that this requires strong management to accomplish. Great job!
Jocelyn was wonderful (as were her teammates). She was friendly, accommodating, nurturing, even a little quippy. My stepmother was feeling ill that evening and was incredibly nauseous. Jocelyn was quick to find her a solution! We were super grateful for that ginger ale ❤️ I was seriously so surprised at how good that seafood buffet was! Those crab legs were well salted and amazing!! We didn’t even need the butter to go along with it. It was perfect! I’m not an huge eater , but I had FOUR PLATES OF LEGS!! Everything was fresh, clean, and well-maintained. Don’t even get me started on that Apple crumble 🤤 We also LOVED the fact they had menu options for the kids. My daughter loved the chicken tenders! Thank you so much for such a great experience! We will definitely be back as I’m sure this will become a family “staple”. Keep up the great work! It is very clear why you’re so...
