Montego Island Grill — Restaurant in Virginia Beach

I went there to support a friend in a showcase last night. When I got there and ordered a drink. The bartender (although a nice girl) served me a small plastic cup that was filled only half way. Mind you, this already small cup contained ice, spirits , and chaser, and it still was only filled half way up for $11. My friend ordered two shots of Hennessey from the v.i.p section and they served him two shot glasses that were half full. When asked where the rest of the shots were. The bartender replied "thats a double shot glass and I poured you a shot in each glass. That will be $22.50 please". So my friend ended up paying for almost a whole bottle for basically one shot. We decided to just buy a bottle. In fact we decided that we would buy several bottles. Well, as you may expect there was an issue. When we tried to order a case of spirits for our section. The manager told us that we could only buy champagne and that the state of Virginia did not allow the sales of liqour bottles. (Which is a complete and total lie that she made up so that the establishment could keep financially raping its costumers by charging them double the price for half the normal amount of spirits). Finally, frustrated and unhappy. We stopped ordering drinks All together, and just waited for the act that we came to support to do his thing so we could leave. We were gonna order food also but the treatment that we felt that we were receiving. Left a bad taste in all of our mouths,and we all decided that the waffle house would be better choice for our money. Montegos may have given us teaspoons of sides and a morsel of meat for some outrageous price. In conclusion, I would never go there again for anything, and I don't recommend anyone go there either. The place is a run down money pit that leaves you feeling robbed when you leave. So to you Montego's, I say shame on you for treating your patrons like that. You may be profitting from your exploitation of your costumers. But you could make so much more by bringing in more costumers. I hardly ever leave reviews but I just had to today because it’s important to peoples health one, and the preparation of quality good tasting food. The first few times I visited here the food was great but the last 2 experiences which was on today 2/25/21 & before that maybe early February the food was horrible. I came back today thinking maybe it was just that one time and the cook will be different but no ! Same result.Who ever is cooking the food now is putting entirely wayyyyy too much salt to the point you can’t get even eat it you start to get a headache half way in because of all the sodium. Flavor and properly seasoning the food is one thing but less is best when it comes to salt it really ruins the food and makes it inedible. On a better note customer service is always polite every time I call to place an order and pick up my food but that’s about the only pleasant thing about the experience.

You stated that I “ abused” the review system by leaving a review ? If you look at other reviews dating “ a week back “ they are stating some of the same complaints about the quality of your food. Now as you stated reviews are to give other customers the honest opinion of establishments so they can visit & enjoy your cuisine, & that’s exactly what I did.If you didn’t like my review what most business owners do is respond in how they can rectify the issue of the customer or make things right, not argue or reprimand them for the type of review they left based on there honest opinions which we are all obligated too. I ordered Oxtail and rice, Jerk Chicken and rice and finally Escovitch Fish and rice. ( I also ordered all three meal with Cabbage and didn’t receive any cabbage in any of the meals !!!!! )

The Oxtail was good enough that I would buy it again.

The Jerk Chicken was horrible, it tasted as if it was baked, nuff rice and no type of moisture for the rice. The food was very very dry !!

The Escovitch Fish and rice was very very dry. The Red Snapper was fried Surprisingly well, however, I only received a few pieces of bland carrots and onions with no flavor at all, it was absolutely not Escovitch Or close to being Escovitch. It’s either they didn’t care when preparing the meal or they simply can’t cook period.

While waiting for my order, a couple was dining in, the young man came to the counter and asked for a little Gravy, he was given a small container of gravy and then he was also up charged $ .75 for it. ( the size container you get with your hot sauce when ordering chicken wings ).

NOTE to OWNER. The reason he ordered the gravy was because the food was or is very very very dry, all rice and no type of moisture or gravy !!! Meaning people are already paying for bad food and to turn around and charge that small amount versus just giving it is not good customer service.

I felt as if I should have just ordered just Large peas and rice and went home and cooked the food I wanted to eat.

This might be good food if your not use to cooking or eating Authentic Caribbean food. The options in the area along the lines of Jamaican Restaurants is few to none. So I guess this is what people HAVE to work with. ( the peas and rice was pretty good, just a lot...
