Blue Cow Ice Cream Co. — Restaurant in Virginia

Mahatma Gandhi once said “the greatness of humanity is not in being human, but in being humane” and I can wholeheartedly state that I lived this at Blue Cow on West Broad Street. I have several dietary restrictions and a stomach that goes into nuclear meltdown with no rhyme or reason, and as such, I cannot eat dairy. I came into Blue Cow knowing this, but having a hankering for ice cream and with the knowledge that some dairy free options are available, I figured I would give it a shot. I was met with a kind welcome by the staff, and was presented with the four non dairy options. The staff member (I believe her name is Carolyn or Caroline maybe), was very patient as I tried all of the flavors available to me. Truthfully, they were quite bad, and the aftertastes were sinister, but this is no fault of the staff or business and rather an assumed risk of the non-dairy lifestyle when entering an ice cream parlor. Overall though, I was just struck with the friendliness of the staff and the compassion and charm of Carolyn/Caroline whilst she dealt with my requests. She listened intently while I described the ins and outs of my struggles, and granted me comfort as I discussed the horrors of chronic gut issues. These little acts of kindness brought me back to Earth, and reminded me of the possible value of seemingly meaningless human connection. I will no doubt recommend this shop to any and all of my friends, especially because true kindness and understanding is hard to come by in this world. This is an amazing ice cream shop locally owned and not a franchise. The ice cream choices include non-dairy as well. Some flavors include blueberry goat cheese (tastes likes a rich blueberry cheesecake!), ironclad coffee chip, birthday cake, banana puddin to name a few. Waffle cones made on site. I tried several before settling on coffee chip and mint chip in a cup. The ice cream is rich and flavorful and so good. The decor is fun, clean, and spacious. Pre-packed pints to go - well maybe not in this heat unless you have a cooler in your car. Ample room for kids or folks in wheelchairs - limited outdoor setting. Access and parking is super easy. There is a girl that serves me every time I come in, she knows exactly what I want, always has different hairstyles always has a bright smile, she’s mixed and seems to still be in high school, but I can tell she thrives anywhere, she brings me joy and as very warming that she remembers my order and face, always asked how my two sons are and tell me to have a great day. They did good hiring her, and the way she talks amazing about the whole staff and how it there mission to make everyone feel welcome I love it.
