Was looking for pizza for dinner and decided against the major chains. Saw there were 555 reviews with a 4.9 rating, and thought to myself, this has got the be the place to get pizza around here.
Coming from NJ I have a high standard for pizza, so the name and the ratings couldn't steer me wrong right? Well to my surprise this place is not worth a 4.9. All of the reviews tout the business and bustling staff in the place. From what I saw, this place is run like a bodega, none of the items in the display looked appetizing, the beef patties, yes I said beef patties, appeared to be over cooked already and was concerned since I had ordered some to see if they were legit. They tasted oily and the meat had absolutely no flavor.
That was the just the beginning of my disappointment in the quality of the product here as well as the questioning of where the reviews came from because nothing lined up with what I was seeing. I was the only person in the place, it was dark inside, looked a bit dirty and unkept a bit. There were 4 people in the place and only one of them appeared to actually be working, possibly the owner.
The order was, 2 patties, an order of 6 wings and 2 pizzas, a half cheese and meatball and a gourmet Chicken Parmesan. As stated the patties were sub par, the wings at $7 for 6 was a waste of money. As for the pizza, I was interested in the Chicken Parm pie. The first issue for me was, who cuts an 18" pie in 6 slices? Not a single slice was the same size as the other to start, and when grabbing a slice out of the box the crust was so hard that it cracked,. When I went took the first bite, the pie was pretty much twice as thick as a regular NY slice should be, paired with the hard crust, it wasn't very appetizing for me. The other pizza was a bit better on the crust, however, there were so many bubbles in it that the cheese slid off of those spots. Clearly the dough was not made properly, or the pizza maker needs to learn that bubbles in pizza are bad. This pie was also a mess with the slices, again 6 slices and since they didn't do a perfect half and half the pie was cut more like 60/40, making for some very big slices.
Not sure who all of these people are who are giving this place 5 stars saying this is the best pizza they have ever had in this area, but I am suspect of these reviews. For the price and quality of the product I would rather eat from one of the chains. I have included a few images of what...
Read more*Update: The owner/manager of the store called me in regards to this issue. I’m happy to say that the conversation went well and the issue was resolved. He was very concerned, understanding and sympathetic and it was evident he really cares about his business. I highly appreciate and respect that and my concerns have been put to rest. I decided to leave the original review so that ppl can see that if there is an issue, they take it seriously. Thank you Kase and we will definitely be continuing to order our pizza from Brooklyn Pizza Authority!
*Original review: I’m not one to ever leave reviews, good nor bad, but felt that I needed to share this. Pizza is good, we order from here quite a bit as we live close, but this isn’t about the food. I just witnessed one of the delivery drivers driving extremely recklessly and could have easily hit me—he actually almost did. He was driving way too fast down Hull street and was far behind me. I decided to switch lanes (with plenty of time and room to do so) and by the time I had crossed over he was right on me and had to switch lanes to avoid hitting me. But that’s not even the main reason I’m upset. When I called and (very kindly, without yelling or attacking anyone) explained the situation, I was told that they’re just “very busy which is why he was in such a rush.” Ok, I can understand that but it’s never an excuse to be driving so recklessly. This was NOT just driving a little fast bc you’re in a rush. But the whole conversation was just straight up annoying bc of how dismissive she was in defending him and I’m sure she didn’t even tell anyone. So that’s another reason I’m posting this. Just simply trying to make them aware of this and that it’s not ok. I would have left more stars as I think they make great pizza, but a restaurant is not just about the food. That’s...
Read moreThe only reason I didn’t give Brooklyn Pizza Authority five stars is because I believe there is always room for improvement. However, this place had some of the best pizza I have had down here in Virginia.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts, where there is a high concentration of Italians. If one thing has disappointed me since moving to Virginia, it’s the cheap, generic pizza you get even from small local pizzerias.
Brooklyn Pizza Authority is different. I can’t comment on how authentic it is as I have never been to Brooklyn, but the pizza tasted the same as the pizza I had in New Jersey and that I grew up eating back home. From what I understand, New York, New Jersey, and Boston pizza is similar, so I am going to assume that if this pizza weren’t authentic, it was pretty close.
The crust was the perfect thickness and consistency, crispy on the bottom but still squishy in the middle. To quote Dave Portnoy, zero flop!
The cheese had the perfect flavor, neither being too salty or not salty enough.
The pizza came out of the oven piping hot and a day later I am still feeling the burn on the roof of my mouth, but that’s what I get for not letting it cool down. The slices were huge, and the prices were reasonable. I spent only a little over thirty dollars, including the tip, for a 18” pizza and four drinks.
The guy working the oven, who I’m assuming was the owner, is from New York City, and he was incredibly friendly to both my son and I.
The inside was a little small for my liking, but was clean and generally comfortable.
In my experience, as far as decent New York style pizza in or around Richmond goes, you only have two choices: Brooklyn Pizza Authority and Benny’s. I will definitely be...
