Before I was married I went to Grandstands to eat a lot because I knew the owner, the food was good, and I could sit at the counter and watch TV. I got married, and discovered that he sold the place to a precious Korean couple. My wife and I go there frequently because the food is still fantastic. We almost always order the Greek grilled chicken salad with homemade tzatziki sauce or Greek dressing. I love the juicy chicken because it is packed with flavor and plentiful. The tomatoes are not cherry, which I dislike, but fresh large chunks, and there are loads of cucumber slices, grilled onions and fresh iceburg lettuce. My wife always gets my portion of olives. We despise restaurants that don't season their food, and we NEVER have that problem here. We usually share the generous portion of crinkle fries that are always hot and crunchy, but never overcooked. We always say we will try the other dishes, but just can't resist this salad. It is always too much food for us, so we enjoy finishing it later. The BEST part of our visits is the sweet friendship we have enjoyed with the new Korean owners. We might have to pay more attention to understand each other, but we are so fond of their sweet nature and attention. If I go alone for a carry-out, the wife always asks about my Angela, making sure she is not sick or too busy. After our first few visits of them preparing our food with our particular requests, we went to the flower shop next store and bought them a "Thank You" bouquet of flowers. The Korean florist helped by writing a message of appreciation in Korean. The owners were so touched. It was a meaningful, poignant encounter. This sealed the deal for us!! We are loyal customers for life. Any struggles over language never interfered with the preparing of the food or our ability to communicate. Our visits there are full of love and respect. I read a previous review that mentioned a negative experience over language that seemed racially motivated, but my wife and I took offense at that response. We must just have a different style of how to approach people. Grandstands ALWAYS makes perfect meals for us, and it is one of our top choices for delicious Greek food. Go there as soon as you can. (BTW, they great burgers...
Read moreAs a Newport News native, I have been going here for years. I will not be going here anymore. Since the management has changed, there has been issue after issue when ordering from Grandstands. Multiple times my order has been wrong, when checking out the elder man can never get the check right and broken English makes it difficult to try to explain and request things. Recently, we placed an order here and the elder man refused to let us pay for an salad stating we had already paid. We had paid for our first order and they had to remake our 2nd order because it was not right. After waiting over 25 minutes for the 2nd order to be remade, we only had to pay for the remaining salad (our 2nd order). We insisted and insisted, he refused. Since then, we have tried to order again and they will not let us. The owner, the female elder, did not let me explain the situation or speak, as she rudely yelled over me and hung up on me. It's so unfortunate that a good little place with great food is so poorly run. Do...
Read moreThere is a huge language barrier now. I ordered their famous Greek chicken salad which was always a favorite of mine before the new ownership. The new ownership decided to change it and put pickled onion on it which changed the flavor of the salad. I called in my order and requested regular red onions on the salad but they did not understand. So when I got there I requested to see the salad before I paid for it and they didn't understand that either. So the cashier showed his frustration by snatching my bank card when I offered it to him. Needless to say there are plenty of other restaurants in the area that offer a Greek chicken salad. I will definitely take my business elsewhere from now on. Also, there used to be a pleasant aroma of Greek seasoning on the grill that you could smell from outside, now there is an overwhelming stench like raw cabbage when you walk in. Very...
