Looking for a restaurant bar where there are frills and the wait staff kisses your a$$?!?! Then Hoss’s Deli is NOT a place you want to go!! But, if you are looking for a biker bar that serves ice cold beer and, in my opinion, serves the BEST and most affordable seafood in Newport News, then Hoss’s Deli is the place to go!
Appropriately named “Hooker Night” is the best night to dine there. Don’t let the fear of a needless cover charge deter you from enjoying Wednesday’s “Hooker Night”. The word “Hooker” is only a play on words and references their seafood specials, you know, fish, hooks, seafood???? Anyway…my favorite dishes are the “Steamed Hooker” and “Tuna Bites”. Food portions are incredibly generous, and the food comes out piping hot. The flavor of the food is better than most of those Port Warrick and City Center dining places. The chefs at Hoss’s Deli know what they are doing!!! Trust me on this…. you will not find another restaurant bar in Newport News / Yorktown / Hampton with better seafood at an affordable price then at Hoss’s Deli!!
Does Hoss’s Deli have great parking? No, but does Hoss’s Deli have the most attentive wait team to deliver the best seafood in town…. also no, however, to the wait teams’ credit, Hoss’s Deli can get unbelievable busy, and the waitresses can get somewhat consumed in flirting with a future boyfriend or speaking with the habitué married man who doesn’t bring his wife and needs to prove his swagger, not his big tips, can still impress the young ladies. But I digress. Most of the habitué married men are drunkards who mean no harm and are usually gone before the evening nightly news begins.
Don’t let the after-mention stuff deter you from eating at Hoss’s Deli!! Just tell yourself you are going, knowing there won’t be parking in front of the restaurant and mentally prepare yourself to park across the street and swiftly cross a busy road, you know, like the frog in the old “Frogger” arcade game, because if you make it across Old Oyster Point Road without getting struck by a vehicle, you’ll experience the coldest beer, best seafood, and the okay-est wait staff in town! Heck, if you do get hit by a vehicle, have the EMTs bandage you up and gurney you over to the restaurant!! Don’t let a little road rash deter you from enjoying some...
Read moreI visited this establishment yesterday (Monday, August 12, 2013) and was greatly disappointed. I came in for lunch because I heard great things about this restaurant on Facebook.
I had the blackened chicken sandwich with provolone cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, and a salad. The chicken sandwich was good but the bun was somewhat chewy and tough. The salad was made with shredded Iceberg lettuce and was served in a basket with the blackened chicken sandwich. I asked for separate plates and I was informed by the bar manager that the restaurant does not have hard plates but has paper plates. I asked for silverware and was informed by the bar manager that they only have plastic utensils.
The restaurant does not have music unless a patron pays money to play music on the jukebox. When I walked in it was virtually silent. I don't think if I pay for a meal at a restaurant I should have to pay for music as well.
I asked for a Vodka Collins with heavy sour mix at 3:00 p.m. when Happy Hour began. That was one of the worst Vodka Collins drinks I have ever been served. It barely tasted sour and was extremely weak.
I spoke to the bar manager and she offered to replace the drink. I asked her if she would make the drink and I asked for a Vodka Sunrise. She made the drink well.
The bar manager was friendly and so was the bartender but I am just not accustomed to eating a meal with plastic utensils and in baskets. I definitely have never had a salad that consisted of shredded Iceberg lettuce.
The business apparently does not see a need to have silverware and hard plates as well as having free music in the business.
I definitely do not recommend visiting this...
Read moreThe fries are wonderfully crispy outside and potato-y inside. The chicken tenders were puny, thin pieces that were overcooked. The cod was fried beautifully, light flakey, and moist. The drinks were average but they did keep them coming until the alcohol-poisoning hit. The manager refused to call an ambulance for my friend and was very nasty to us demanding we leave immediately. A group of people stood around watching my friend gasping to breathe around the vomit spewing everywhere and not one of them would call 911 while I kept my friend conscious and from choking. I had to call an ambulance while the manager was yelling at me to take my friend and leave. Found out at the ER they get a lot of emergency cases of alcohol poisoned patients from Hoss's Deli. The manager kept saying, "He's just drunk! Get him out of here!" and, "He shouldn't have drank so much." At which point does she take responsibility for over serving her customers? This woman is going to end up killing someone and should not be serving alcohol nor managing a bar, especially considering she was the one pouring the all the drinks waitstaff delivered to every customer. How she could stand there watching my struggle to keep my friend from losing consciousness and choking on the constant flow of vomit and blame him for consuming the drinks she just kept pouring---to the tune of $168.75 served to a party of 2 people--- and flat refuse 3 separate times to call 911 get him the medical help he required is beyond me. What a horrible human being! Been going there more than a decade....
