We came here for a late lunch on a Monday. My parents, nephew and niece had been here In the past. It is a elegant feeling place when you approach. After entering you can see that it is a family friendly eatery. The greeter assisted us upon entry and had us wait till a table was ready which only took a few minutes.
We were seated in the back room. It had games on a shelf for the kids. The restaurant had a quaint and unique feel for Smith mountain lake. Our table was near the chimney. We ordered shortly after reviewing menus. The waitress was kind and swiftly took our orders. I settled on the cafe burger. I think it is the signature burger for this place.
We waited a fair amount of time for five meals to be prepared. The burger meal came with fries which I chose. I think they had a few other side choices like the home made potato chips chosen by my niece. The chips were perfectly cooked to a super crunch. I was pleasantly surprised by the cafe burger. It was cooked to perfection and had a great flavor. I am not sure why, but it was an amazing burger. The beef has to be top quality because it was surprisingly delicious, yet not overseasoned. My fries were natural cut with some skin still on the tater.
All in all, the price is fair, but I didn't pay so what can I say. If you come out to the lake and want to sit down for a nice meal, make sure you come to this establishment. It is tucked off the main road but...
Read moreSuch a great place and the food was phenomenal! They open at 7 a.m., which is perfect for us. It's so hard to find a restaurant tucked away by the lake that actually has a full breakfast menu and is open year-round. I was so hungry, I forgot to take photos!
Old Oak Cafe is also super clean inside, which is appreciated by us. My husband said there was only one unisex bathroom, but we didn't ask if there was another. That's kind of a non-starter for me, because I'm not going to use a bathroom that men have used. However I didn't take off any stars for that, because there may very well be another restroom.
Since this was 10 a.m. on a Tuesday, the crowd was mostly older, just like us. The seating is not private at all and you're really tucked up against each other, which makes conversation difficult, it makes me pay attention to anyone that's a jackass around me oh, and I was not disappointed! When an elderly husband gets up and leaves the restaurant, and doesn't even help his wife up, that's just ludicrous in my book. But again, not the restaurant's issue,...
Read moreWe have enjoyed Old Oak Cafe for years. They are fairly priced for what you get. Both my wife and I love their catfish dinner, but you have to call ahead to be sure they have some on hand. Their coleslaw is some of the best that I have eaten. This past weekend they did not have the catfish, but we went anyway. My wife loves their fried shrimp dinner so she got that. I was not feeling like a heavy meal so I ordered the spinach salad, hold the onions. The dressing was terrific and the salad was delicious and filled me. The only disappointment that I have had there is their fish and chips meal, get something else. Another meal that I enjoy is their chicken or beef liver dinner, but get the gravy...
