This place is terrific. I have never had a bad meal there. In fact, for standard American Mexican food, they're among the very best.
The at-your-table guacamole is rich and made just as spicy (or not) as you like it. They don't skimp on it, either. It's more than enough for a table to share.
I'm partial to their specialty burritos, particularly the fajita burrito. It's not a complicated entree -- just fajita fixings in a burrito topped with cheese sauce -- and that's why it's so good. It's simple enough that the kitchen can focus on quality and not rely on showiness or unnecessary complexity. The quality is apparent, delicious, and satisfying.
They're also very willing to make substitutions and alter dishes to your taste and preferences. The aforementioned fajita burritos come with your choice of steak or chicken, or one of each, but they have loaded one with shrimp for us, despite it not being on the menu. If you'd like this or that on the side, they're willing to do that, too.
One important point about the unsung best item on the menu. It's the black beans. They're phenomenal. Easily the best black beans I've ever had. They're smoky, flavorful, and filling. They're not slimy as beans so often are, and the staff will give them to you instead of the refried beans (which are good, but not as good as the black beans) if you ask. YOU SHOULD ASK.
Portion sizes are a bit bigger than average, and when you factor in endless chips, plus any sides (again, order the black beans), you'll be full and ready to take home leftovers, too.
The prices are just right for the quality of the food. It's really good food, but still simple enough to keep the prices reasonable. It's worth the price.
The Busy Street location is not large, and they have wisely avoided cramming too many tables and booths in the limited space. As a result, you won't feel cramped, but on a busy night you may not have a seat right away. Just as it's worth the price, it's worth the wait. But if you can't wait, take-out is a great...
Read moreThe veggies in my fajitas were mostly raw, not sautéed. There wasn't a whole lot of chicken, mostly just raw veggies. Most of the veggies were cut very large, making it a bit difficult to put them into a taco. There were a good bit of pepper seeds, as well.
I couldn't even eat much of it, but what I did gave me an upset stomach and indigestion. Since it was the night of Christmas Eve, I didn't bother with calling and saying anything.
As for the guacamole, I've never seen or had guacamole this... watery? It was so watery, I actually took a video to show it better. The guacamole was on the expensive side, in my opinion at least, but you do get a good bit of it, so price is probably fair or maybe just a tiny bit high. However, at best, it was just ok. I won't be buying guacamole from there again, nor will we be returning.
As soon as I saw and tasted the food, I remembered exactly why we quit going to Plaza Azteca. Kicking myself for even trying again, especially for our Christmas Eve dinner.
The food was barely warm when we got it, however, part of that is my fault. I was 10 or so minutes late picking up, because I went to the wrong location first. It was cool and rainy outside, so by the time I got home (5 minutes away), the food was cold. I didn't even know they had another location, until I went to the wrong one.
The guacamole being brown is only because this was taken the next morning (I forgot to take a picture the night I got and ate it). It was not brown when I got it, just wanted to make sure to represent what I did get clearly.
A lot of people seem to love Plaza Azteca, so maybe we just have bad luck when we go there. We liked it a lot, too, when the Westchester location initially opened. Until the quality went downhill. Seems to be pretty hit or...
Read moreI decided to stop at this location for lunch by myself. Upon arrival there was a small wait to be seated and there were 2 people after me and we were pretty much seated at the same time right across from each other. The other table was served quickly. I did order maybe a minute before the other table because I quickly made my decision on the meal I wanted and yet they continued to be served before me. I was left waiting for my meal at least 12 minutes after the other table received their food-I timed it.I had to ask another server to ask about my food because I ordered first and ordered the same exact meal as the other table. You never want to make it about race but unfortunately it feels this way. The table across from me were two white women and nothing against them because it was not their fault. But it was more than clear that they received better treatment. Now when it comes to food, it was great. But otherwise the service was horrible and made me feel uncomfortable. I will not be returning to this establishment to eat. Its unfortunate that I have to leave such a negative review but it is my reality. I did attempt to speak with a manager before posting this review but I was told that there was no...
