3 stars about sums this up as it was very middle of the road. The server was not very attentive. When he did return to our table he almost seemed astonished that we were there or needed anything. Mind you the restaurant was dead aside from the 7 people seated at the bar which was being tended by two bar tenders.
We ordered our drinks and the server brought my husband the wrong drink and it took ages to get him back to the table to let him know. The food was mediocre. We ordered a pizza, fish & chips and the children’s butter pasta. First off they never brought me my salad until I asked for it after receiving my entree. The butter noddles were scorching hot and drowning in butter, it almost looked like a bowl of soup. I suspect they had microwaved them. The pizza was not bad but nothing to write home about. The fish was good but a little bland. A slice of lemon would have helped a little but they did not provide any. Perhaps the ladies tending bar could have given me one as they seemed more attentive to their customers than our server. The fries that came with my fish would have been good had they not been barely warm. Lastly, when I did receive my salad it was pretty awful. The cucumbers were dry as if they had been sliced quite a long time beforehand, the cherry tomatoes were old and squishy and the lettuce did not taste very fresh either.
Over all I would not be inclined to return unfortunately. Even when they seated us with our two small children who both required high chairs, they put us at a table where the high chairs could barely be pushed close enough to the table. To be fair the base of the table was quite substantial but there were plenty of other empty tables that would have been a better choice. Going by reviews I expected better not to mention the fact that they charge as much as they do for lack luster food and service. In this case, three stars is pretty...
Read moreI had the misfortune of dining at Schooners Grill, and I can confidently say this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. Where do I even begin? Let’s start with the food—if you can even call it that. The chicken was so bland it might as well have been boiled in plain water. No seasoning, no flavor—just a sad, tasteless slab of meat on the plate. The fries? Disgusting. They tasted like they had been tossed in a dirty fryer used for cooking okra, leaving them with an off-putting, greasy taste. The mashed potatoes were clearly the cheapest instant variety you can find in a supermarket, devoid of any creaminess or freshness. But the steak bites were truly the worst offender, drenched in what tasted like nothing but Worcestershire sauce, as if they were trying to cover up the fact that they didn’t bother to season them properly. It was a culinary disaster.
At first, our server Jasmine seemed fine, but everything changed the moment we politely mentioned that there was something wrong with our food. Her attitude took a nosedive. She became defensive and rude, acting like we were inconveniencing her by simply pointing out issues with the meal. Instead of addressing our concerns, she gave us eye-rolls and dismissive, snarky remarks, making it clear she had no interest in providing decent service. After that, she barely acknowledged our table, as if we were the problem for daring to expect a decent meal.
To sum it up, Schooners Grill serves up overpriced, poorly cooked food with some of the worst customer service I’ve ever encountered. Jasmine’s attitude, especially after we brought up the issues, was the cherry on top of an absolutely horrible meal. Save yourself the disappointment and go...
Read moreThe food is good, however the service is not up to par. I am not a resident of Newport News and was disappointed about a few things. My family and I visited the restaurant 8/9/18, and ordered a special. The food was good, so we decided to return today and order the same special. We placed an order over the phone, however did not know the name of the special, but described it to the host who placed the order. After arriving we noticed th order was incorrect and tried to explain what we had the day before, fortunately, our server (from the previous day) noticed us and we asked her to explain the name of the order to hostess. The hostess grew upset and was unprofessional when she blantantly stated that “we” as the customers should’ve clarified what we wanted over the phone and implied that she asked us specifically about if the food was grilled. I explained to her that we did not know the name of special, which is why we were explaining the order to a “schooners employee.” After waiting for the original incorrect order we are told that they could not make it, the manager offered no solution other than we were a bother. Both the hostess and the manager have minimal experience in handling customer related matters. I have never been to a restaurant where “we” as the customers were treated the way we were. Its unfortunate, because I explained to the manager that we had just eaten there yesterday, but based on his level of service we would never return. If you prefer a friendly environment please go elsewhere. Food can be great, however it’s the service that...
