We are visiting Waco and came across Heritage Creamery as we drove past Baylor University. It's a fun looking place. It looks like it used to be a neighborhood house that has been converted into a business. The exterior is a little rustic looking but quite inviting. The interior is pleasant, looking very much like the ice cream parlor it is. There is a selection of about 10 different flavors of ice cream. I chose a coffee ice cream and my wife got a butter pecan. (They had fancier names but I don't remember them.) We then sat down at one of many small round tables that surrounds the interior walls to enjoy our dessert. We found that the flavor was good, but that the consistency could have been a bit creamier. I stirred mine up like I used to do when I was 8 years old in order to smooth the ice cream out a bit. That helped. Don't get me wrong...it's not icy like ice cream you leave forgotten in the freezer for two years. It's just not silky smooth like premium ice cream should be. But it's still enjoyable. I like that there is a coffee shop next door to the ice cream shop. I stopped at the coffee shop first so that I could enjoy a cup of coffee with my ice cream. I also noticed that the place has a nice little patio in the back for those who enjoy their dessert in the great outdoors, and the shop has very good wifi. All in all, it was quite a pleasant experience, but would be close to perfect if the ice cream was just a...
Read moreIâve visited here a few times over the past several years. Itâs a fairly nice experience, itâs a unique place and not a franchise which is the very reason for me to visit. As I drove up the dark street I thought maybe the place had gone out of business. The vintage ice cream truck parked on the street sat like an abandoned ship in dry-dock, with all manner of dirt, leaves and debris piled around. It seems the street-sweepers simply drive around the edges of this eyesore. All-the-while shoving more crap under around the resting hulk. It is, apparently, a vehicle parked on a public street with an expired, 2012 registration sticker. Waco is a wonderfully forgiving town. The ice cream is good, but 4 flavors were âoutâ. This was surprising since it was a Thursday evening and Baylor University is on Christmas break. No students around to scarf up all the goodies. As I sat leisurely enjoying two scoops in a freshly-made and quite delicious waffle cone, I noticed the dilapidated look about the place. Several large water stains on the ceiling, many burned out light bulbs, etc. The most remarkable feature was the astonishing collection of cobwebs about the place. I think that the last time a dust-broom has been here was opening day in March 2016. I WAS taken by the length-of-service of the light bulbs above the service bar. They burn nicely and CLEARLY havenât been touched in an impressively long time. Must be LEDs....
Read moreI decided to stop by because I love supporting local ice cream shops and trying unique flavors.
The website doesn't mention that this shop is on the campus of Baylor University and that there is NO PARKING (there is a parking garage you see once you PASS the shop). So that already is inconvenient.
I got a scoop of the brown butter pecan ice cream. When the girl scooped it into my cup, the ice cream started falling apart, which is never a good sign. Once I took a bite my suspicions were confirmed; this is a heavily ice-based ice cream that isn't very creamy. It tastes just liked cheap homemade ice cream you make in an ice cream maker. The texture is all wrong. The flavor wasn't even super strong. The best part of the whole scoop were the pecans! I threw over half of it away, which is rare for me to waste ice cream.
The employees were very nice, which is why this review is a two star instead of a one star.
I wonder if the 4.7 rating is because people in Texas don't know what real ice cream tastes like. Or they're all Baylor students that don't have other ice cream options. I'm from Ohio so maybe we have more abundant, creamy ice cream with all of our dairy cows? I'm really not sure, but I didn't care for the ice cream here. Definitely...
