If Thomas Keller got tired of running his multiple culinary theaters and decided to move to the northeast to enjoy the seasons in the sunset of his life, he would open this restaurant.
The food is simply, sublime.
Masquerading as a snack shack, this "cremee stand" serves the best buttermilk fried chicken I've had in the past few years, anywhere. The buttermilk tenders are also used in various sandwiches. The technique is simple, but the results are grand. Buttermilk soaked, then fried in a simple flour, seasoning and parsley mix, this is chicken for the Gods.
More than affordable prices for everything. Highest price was $14 for the duck when we went. The menu has all the basics you'd expect and some you didn't. Specials vary from duck leg confit over salad with raspberries and chevre, Vietnamese style sausage, an awesome duck Cubano with duck confit and pork belly, chicken fried oyster roll, house smoked salmon, a Codwich, and so much more.
Cremees and sundaes are exceptional, of course. You've seen the pictures.
Yes, there is a wait. Good food takes time. Don't want to wait? Go eat a bag of chips.
This is a meal I joyfully drive 2 hours for. If it was 4 hours, I would still come.
I would just order way more food! I would never have thought I would find a haute cuisine roadside stand in Vermont, but here I am.
I hesitated for weeks before leaving this review for fear of making my own wait in line worse in the future.
Beyond the AMAZING food, is the AMAZING crew! *slow clap into applause * These young culinarians do a stellar job, obviously well trained. As a retired culinarian, it's inspiring to see a successful business powered by positive energy in the kitchen.
Go eat here. If you don't enjoy it, there is something wrong with you. Try meditating and yoga. Heal yourself.
Love yourself. Love...
Read more"A Creemee in name only." I am all about the Vermont maple creemee. The maple creemee at the Canteen is maple flavored soft serve, not a Vermont maple creemee. The state of Vermont has published their definition of a creemee and this one does not meet those standards. I would recommend skipping the maple and trying one of their other flavors. They are probably better. I almost went with black cherry. Should'a. The food was good. I had chicken fingers and fries. The chicken was tasty and the fries were very crispy, which I like, but rather short. Neither here nor there just an interesting fact. The Canteen is a very hip place. (I must need mine replaced because I wasn't down with it. 😁) They sell T-shirts in the style of famous brands but with Canteen instead of the famous name. They will give you a sticky note to leave your mark of their wall. They play music only on vinyl. Okay, that's cool! That got them 5 stars for atmo. 👍 The location is a very busy plaza. Watch for speed humps! There are tables near the building with shade and full sun tables on a near by green. If you are looking for a real Vermont maple creemee look for a sugar house...
Read moreI am not certain how this little gem of an eatery has gone unnoticed by me for the last 4 years, they opened in 2016, but it is definitely on my radar now. In fact I've been back twice since being introduced to it by a friend 6 days ago, and accomplishing that involves a two-hour round trip but it is so worth it. CCC serves up the best fried chicken I've had in 20 years of living in Vermont. You can get it by the piece or in a variety of delicious sandwiches and wraps. They also do burgers, fish, ribs, awesome hot dogs and more. Whatever you get do yourself the favor of saving room for dessert because they have some of the best and creative creemee (aka soft serve outside of Vermont) flavors, for example lemon-honey and basil twist. Yes basil, who does that? You can do like me and get your creemee and enjoy it while you wait for your food order because CCC is strictly a take-out place. The wait can be a little long depending on the number of customers ahead of you so the ice cream helps to while away the time. I'm already thinking about what to get next time which will probably...
