Kalakas Mexican Restaurant is truly a gem in the Oklahoma City area. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by an atmosphere that immediately immerses you in the vibrant and rich tradition of Mexican culture. The décor, themed around kalakas (skeletons), is tastefully done and adds such a unique, festive touch, it feels like you’ve stepped into a beautiful celebration of heritage and art.
We started our meal with the fish and shrimp ceviche, which was absolutely perfect. The flavor balance was spot on, a refreshing lime base with just a hint of spice. As someone who finds many ceviches in OKC overly spicy, I was thrilled to finally enjoy one where the heat didn’t overpower the flavor. This one let the freshness of the seafood shine through beautifully.
My 13 year old daughter ordered the birria tacos, and she absolutely loved them. She was able to request less spice, and they were incredibly accommodating, the result was tender, flavorful tacos she couldn’t stop raving about. I also tried the Mexican style tacos along with rice and beans, which were incredibly authentic and full of bold, savory flavor.
My 9-year-old son had the pescado con arroz (fish with rice), and it was a hit. The fish was light, fresh, and perfectly crisped, and the white rice with mixed vegetables added a nice, healthy balance to the dish. It’s always wonderful when kids enjoy their meals, and he definitely cleaned his plate!
Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the wet burrito, and I’m so glad we did. We opted to pair it with their cream sauce and salsa especial, a combination that took the dish to the next level. Rich, comforting, and very filling.
One small but appreciated detail, the bathrooms were exceptionally clean and surprisingly well-decorated. My 13 year old daughter was so impressed she ended up taking selfies in there, not something she usually does in a restaurant bathroom, so that says a lot!
Overall, Kalakas has quickly become a new favorite. The staff was friendly, the service was attentive, and the food was truly outstanding. Whether you’re craving authentic Mexican comfort food or something a little lighter and fresh like ceviche, Kalakas delivers on every level....

From the moment I stepped through the door, I was transported to a vibrant Mexican oasis. The warm, inviting atmosphere was enhanced by the lively aroma of spices and sizzling fajitas. The menu was a delightful array of traditional and innovative Mexican dishes, each one a testament to the chef's culinary artistry. I started with a basket of freshly made chips and a trio of salsas that ranged from mild to fiery. The spicy salsa was particularly memorable, with a bold and flavorful kick that left my taste buds wanting more. For my main course, I indulged in the Cochinita Pibil Plate, a masterpiece of flavor and texture. The marinated shoulder blade was incredibly tender and juicy, with a rich and satisfying flavor. The accompanying achiote paste added a delightful depth of flavor, while the [Ingredient] provided a refreshing contrast. The dish was served with a side of perfectly seasoned rice and beans, completing a truly satisfying meal. The service was impeccable, with our server Brenda being particularly amazing with my daughter. She was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. The overall experience was nothing short of exceptional. If you're searching for an authentic and unforgettable Mexican dining experience in Oklahoma City, Kalakas is a must-visit.
