TL;DR: The food absolutely SMACKS, but getting misgendered on accident and overhearing backroom domestic disputes gave me the ick 😬😬😬
There was a mitzvah I had to fulfil, as is obligated of all American Jews: I had to find a place to get Chinese food at during Christmas! After pulling up to my usual spot at Tang's Wok and hearing they weren't taking any more orders, I decided to check Wing Kee out.
Walking into the place I heard the neon lights buzzing--that was a good omen that the food would SMACK--and I arrived at the front to order. I played it safe and ordered some General Tso's to see if they made it crunchy, but during the ordering process the couple running the place were arguing back and forth with each other. The one who met me at the front did their best to keep up a good appearance--despite what appeared to be a dysfunctional relationship--but all of that can be triggering, so if you've experienced domestic abuse or workplace abuse I'd tread carefully when ordering in-person.
After waiting for a bit the person at the front gave me my order in a stapled brown bag and wished me a "Here you go, sir". Their politeness is appreciated, but I'm not a dude at all! I raised no fuss because at that point I'd rather get my food and head on out anyway, yet it sucked that I thought more about why the heck they thought I was a guy instead of how delicious the food I paid for would be! I'd imagine if you're accustomed to old-fashioned customer service and/or are gender-conforming then this'd be a non-issue, but for gender non-conforming and/or LGBTQ+ folks I'd advise to tread carefully to minimize discomfort.
I eventually arrived home with the General Tso's chicken and man, that food was good! The sauce they used for it was sweet with a little kick--not as spicy as I like, but that's a non-issue I got plenty of spices--and everything went down my belly as it should. Mitzvah fulfilled! Though I do have a sour taste in my mouth from the ordering experience, I may not be a repeat customer there unfortunately...

Read moreI just picked up seafood soup and 4 crab rangoons. After getting home, I discovered that they didn't give me sauce for the rangoons (the bag was stapled shut so I didn't check before leaving). I called in to let me know and a lady explained that the small order doesn't get sauce. I asked her, "How was I supposed to know that. It was my first coming to your restaurant." I was going to suggest mentioning that to customers so they don't get home to eat dry rangoons. She began shouting and wouldn't let me get a word in to the point where I was just saying, 'listen...listen...listen!" She continued yelling at me and wouldn't let me speak. Once she was done shouting, I said that I would never come back and her response was to hang up on me. Oh...and the seafood soup had no flavor. I had sympathy for the owners being immigrants with very little English trying to chase the American dream so I had left them a tip and tried to show some kindness while picking up my food. It's like they say, no good deed...
