The Good: Atmosphere, service, selection. The Bad: Price Quality
My wife and I have lived, literally, around the corner from this establishment for the 3 years we have lived in Vancouver and this was our first time stopping by. The outside is clean and you instantly know you are entering a sports bar. The hostess greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere we liked. We found a nice table in the upper restaurant section and our waitress was with us quickly. There was also a live band setting up that we will get to in a moment. There was an odd smell to the place, not sure if it was a chemical of some sort or what but it was noticeably but not overly unpleasant, just odd. The waitress took our drink orders, Cola for my wife and Iced Tea for me. We looked over the menu. I have been looking for a good steak in Vancouver since we arrived here and I was recommended this place from a friend. I had already looked over the menu online before we arrived and so I knew what I would be ordering. I selected the Ribeye with a baked Potato, vegetable and a salad, additionally I ordered the coconut prawns as a side. My wife ordered the Philly New York sandwich. As we waited for our food the stage was a hum of activity as a live band was setting up to provide music. I LOVE live music and have been dragging my wife to shows all over Portland for the last couple of years. This place had not yet came onto my music radar despite it's proximity to my home. I did not catch the bands name, they were covering eighties hits this night. They were good and had me singing along with virtually every selection. I will definitely be back for the music.
The salad was great, hard to ruin a house salad with no dressing. My ribeye arrived and it looked amazing, topped with mushrooms and herb butter. The steak was cooked exactly as medium-rare as I like it. As I ate the steak I kept getting an odd taste. It wasn't bad, just not what I am used to tasting on my steak. I thought it might be the herb combination in the butter but at any rate, like I said, it was not off putting enough for me to stop eating. The coconut prawns were excellent and I will likely eat them again if we return. As I dug into my baked potato I quickly found that it was in fact the butter that was weird tasting, not the herbs. I actually could not even finish my potato, which is a rarity for me. I am not sure if it was bad butter, or just butter that did not taste good. On the other side of the table my wife was thoroughly enjoying her entire meal. She said that the fries were amazing, best she has had in The Couve and her sandwich was tasty and cooked well, maybe in need of more mushrooms though.
I will likely return for the music and to sample some other menu items, I doubt I will try the steak again. Our bill came to $67.20, $80.00 with the tip which is a bit more than I wanted to spend on a Wednesday night... But I just HAD to...
Read moreGood music..Bands Fri/Sat..ok food prices way high for food you receive.....Drinks ok..high like most places in this area..wait/staff rude or nice depending on who waits on you...owners go back on their words at least with me..Went for my birthday with son and daughter in law. Was looking for a table after paying a ten $ cover charge each,to find the seating was all taken..Being older had I known we would of not gone in..But had other ppl coming and called owner and said if he could hold 1 table for me then we would call get even for being overcharged for my food and tab..was told no holding of tables so we got their early, thinking we would find 1 table for 6 ppl...before we spoke to anyone the so called manager(was told they didn't have anyone as a manager long ago) came up to us and said to me if I started anything in the bar ?.?? Read moreOne of those places where 90% of the customers appear to be regulars as well as appearing to be relaxed. One of those places where it's always dark even at the height of summer, at noon, on a cloudless day, on a weekend. At the moment, it's quiet, but gathering from the stage, I suspect that is not always the case. Well, that's kind of a relief, crowds make ne nervous and a lot of noise interferes with my taste buds. And that's why I'm here... for the food. Hmmm, the Alfredo looks good. but I am tempted by the onion rings which are an upgrade with the sandwiches so I go for the Club and it's quite a sight! Built like a beaver dam, logical and ordered, yet jumbled and diverse. Things are looking good and the onion rings look like they were clipped out of a food magazine. First off, the onion rings are perfect! Why in the world would anyone choose tots or fries when they could have this paragon of culinary allium, this concentric concept of deep fried tears? Crunchy and soft, brown and not burned, they alone are a good enough reason to come back. The club sandwich, although just a touch daunting rewards my first tentative bite with a flood of smoke. You know, it's one of those guy things that probably harken back to neanderthals sitting around in front of their caves waxing philosophic and smoking the days wooly mammoth. That is, smoking meats... Not like rolling a fat one and smoking that. I can't tell exactly where that smoke is coming from, I thought at first it was the bacon, but although the bacon is crisp, thick, and savory, I don't think that's it. Maybe the Chicken or the Ham? Wherever it's coming from, it bumps up that decent Club Sandwich and makes it memorable. Like a beautiful woman wearing some captivating scent. Good crunch to the toast, not too much of any one ingredient and not too little either. A juggling act of parts that add up to more than their sum. I don't drink so I'm not really inclined towards bars in general, but there are bars and there are bars and there is bar food and then there is bar food. This falls in the latter. Damn good bar food in an absolutely...
