I recently had the pleasure of dining at Bonjon Rumí, an Afghan gem tucked away in Washington, DC, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked in, the warm ambiance and traditional Afghan decor set the tone for a cozy and welcoming evening.
The menu offered a wide selection of authentic Afghan dishes, and everything we ordered was bursting with flavor. The mantu (steamed dumplings) were delicate and savory, topped with a rich yogurt and tomato sauce. The kabuli pulao was perfectly cooked—fluffy rice mixed with tender lamb, raisins, and carrots, creating a beautiful balance of sweetness and spice. The kebabs were grilled to perfection, juicy and well-seasoned, paired with fragrant naan that tasted freshly baked.
Service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Deniz was amazing!! The staff took the time to explain the dishes and even recommended a few standout items. The portions were generous, and the pricing was very reasonable for the quality and authenticity of the food.
For anyone looking to explore Afghan cuisine or simply enjoy a comforting and flavorful meal, Bonjon is a must-visit. It’s clear that a lot of care and tradition go into every dish, making it one of the best Afghan dining experiences in DC....
Read moreWell. Half good, half bad. I was super excited after seeing the reviews and photos. Ordered the Sheer chai, which was advertised as a pink chai garnished with pistachio. The menu also had Afghan milk chai, which clearly was a different price and description. I ordered the Sheer Chai right when I got seated, and never received. We were the only couple in the place, had to remind the server after 15min. Then, a mug of normal chai was plopped down, I even showed the picture of the drink in their website, and I said this isn't what was ordered. She gaslit me and said sheer chai means milk chai, and that's what she gave me... It was honestly pretty good though. Also ordered the Murgh Karahi, which was amazing and a bit spicy. It came with a huge fresh naan bread. Ordered the zeresk rice on the side, it was also a large portion and totally worth it. Sadly, the Ash was terrible-of course, to each their own. It was an odd combo of carrot slice, lentils, beans, chick peas and over cooked noodles. We did let them know how we felt about the Ash and chai, no apologies given. Will absolutely...
Read moreStepping into BonJon Rumi was like stepping into another world—a haven where Afghan heritage unfolded through every bite, every aroma, every perfectly crafted dish. The atmosphere welcomed my husband and me with a warmth that immediately set the tone for an extraordinary evening. We started with the meze platter, a vibrant and delightful array of flavors accompanied by their house-made bread, so soft and fragrant it seemed to melt in our mouths. For the main course, I indulged in the Shami Kabobs, tender and exquisitely spiced, each bite more soul-stirring than the last, while my husband savored the mixed grill—a medley of perfectly cooked meats that encapsulated the essence of Afghan culinary mastery. This wasn’t just a meal; it was a journey—an experience that transcended the mere act of dining and became a celebration of life, culture, and culinary poetry. BonJon Rumi is more than a restaurant; it’s a treasure trove of flavor and tradition that left us utterly enchanted and eagerly...
