Ok, so I actually worked in a doughnut shop MAKING doughnuts as a teenager, so I have nuanced opinions about doughnuts. But at the same time, it's hard to really make a "bad" piece of sweetened dough with sugar inside and sugar on top. I mean, how do you mess that up?
I was not impressed by Doughnutsville. I had wanted to try it for a long time because I've lived in Washington for many years and I've heard good things about the owners. But it's a little out of my way these days.
I tried to go yesterday, but the parking situation is awful. And I didn't have time to wait in the long line yesterday morning, so I planned better and resolved to go today. If you don't know there is only one entrance from telegraph) and one exit (on 300 E), coming from Washington Fields, it is almost inevitable you will try to turn into the exit. So today I approached from telegraph but as I was turning in, an old dude was exciting through the entrance, which isn't really wide enough for two vehicles, so that was fun. Of course he gave me an annoyed look as if I was the one going the wrong way. Haha. That's not Doughnutsville's fault though.
Anyway, we were lucky and kind of beat the rush. If we had gotten there 3 minutes later the line would have annoyed me and we wouldn't have waited. There is simply no doughnut better enough than other doughnuts to justify waiting in a long line.
The selection was a little underwhelming. Lin's has a better selection overall. And they had cream filled bars that were glazed, which I always think is kind of a weird thing. Traditionally, if a doughnut is cream filled, it has a topping with a sharper flavor to offset the cream. Chocolate is the most common, but maple is not unheard of. Glazed cream filled is just... Unattractive looking and boring. But it was cream cheese filled, so we got one to try.
There was a Nutella filled doughnut, which we got because other family members like Nutella. They had a nice little selection of old fashioned, so we got one of each of those. They left one with no glaze, which I liked because they are better for dipping than glazed, but people are such sugar addicts anymore than you don't see it quite as often. And I had to get a requisite apple fritter because everybody knows that it's the most important doughnut. Everything else LOOKED fine.
The box was nice and sturdy, which I did like because I was able to hold it with one hand and not have it try to flop open.
The service was good. Reasonably fast.
Unfortunately, when I got home I was disappointed. Most of the basic doughnuts were fine. But the apple fritter has very little apple in it at all. They should have just called it a cinnamon fritter. Don't get me wrong, it was edible, but it just needed A LOT more apple in it. They also didn't do a very good of chopping up the dough. Apple fritters are supposed to be like a pull apart, where you have a lot of little morsels that pull apart with apple (or whatever fruit) wedged in between. This was more like fory or five large pieces of dough just squished together. Lins fritters are much better. Not to mention that Lins has other flavors besides apple. Now, keep in mind that I make better fritters than either of them. And Lins is far from perfectly consistent with their overall fritter quality, as well. But this place is supposed to be a specialty doughnut store. They should have good quality fritters every time.
When I got to the weird glazed cream cheese filled bar, we cut it open to share because it was fairly large.... It was about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. But it had a single tiny quarter-sized dollop of cream cheese right at one end, and the rest of it was completely unfilled. In addition, the glaze was a bit too thick and had pooled on top of the bar. It was a pretty sad and disappointing doughnut.
That's the scoop. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back, but I wouldn't avoid the place either. Nothing was "bad", but it just wasn't good enough to justify a...
Read moreWe heard they had opened recently and that they had kolaches, so we had to stop by and try it out.
If you’re familiar with Hruska’s Kolaches in northern Utah, this is nothing like that. I was hoping it would be similar. But it is not.
That aside, it was still pretty good. After I got past the difference between my expectations and reality, I found that I really enjoyed the flavor of the kolache. The smoked sausage was super juicy and tasty.
We also ordered 4 donuts to try out.
Glazed – pretty good, but a little too fluffy. Kind of like a slightly improved Harmon’s donut.
Old fashioned maple – pretty good flavor. A little dry, but still really yummy. My favorite of the 4 we tried.
Chocolate twist – not bad. Not enough chocolate icing, but still pretty good, and pretty good texture.
Raspberry filled – Usually my favorite donut at most shops, but my least favorite of the four we tried here. The filling was too sweet for raspberry jam/syrup/jelly, and it made it taste fake. The donut itself was not bad. I squeezed out half of the filling, and the donut was honestly 3x better.
It was a decent donut shop with pretty good kolaches. Worth a return for kolaches, and maybe another shot at the donuts. But don’t expect to eat the best...
