FRUITIVE, is an organic, vegan, mostly take-a-way eatery. Fruitive opened it's door in 2012, when Gregg Rozeboom "created a place where his family could come and enjoy a healthy meal."
Gregg's tiny eatery projects a British library feel. On your left, library stacks fill the wall. Vegan treats are displayed across the center of the room. The order counter is ahead, on the far right. The "librarian," cashier, and hostess, Catherine, is friendly and knowledgeable.
Catherine suggested the spicy Tuscan Kale Wrap, an over-sized, whole wheat tortilla that's stuffed with minced, organic vegetables. (butternut squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, quinoa, garbanzo beans, caramelized onions, basil pesto mayo, hummus, black and cayenne pepper). The wrap is lightly toasted before serving.
There is a large selection of vegan drinks. My choice is freshly brewed, lemon-ginger tea. The combination is quite filling and delicious.
Fruitive is a compact cafe. Inside, seating at a couple of tables, and on stools, at a narrow, bar height counter, that hugs the street and patio windows. Outside, are a half dozen, or so, wheelchair accessible tables. Washroom use requires a code.
This is a unique, wonderful, vegan, gluten free eatery. If you're in DC, don't miss it.
UPDATE: As my home is on the West Coast visiting DC is not a frequent event. So my first breakfast was at Fruitive. I ordered the Cinnamon Apple Waffle which contains apples, candied, finely chopped almonds, whipped coconut cream, cinnamon, and pure maple syrup. Chef Anna cooks the waffle until the edge is crisp and the center is tender. Deliciously sweet. The whipped coconut cream is a pleasant surprise. Highly...
Read moreI went back in forth with given them 3 or 4 stars. I went with 4 because everything else good.
Atmosphere : Small shop right in City Center. Nice little place with some mellow music. Some sitting inside and out but overall not a big place.
Cleanliness: Clean place, did not see anything that made me cringe.
Service: Staff is great - however, do plan to hate at least 15-20 minutes for your food.
Food: I personally enjoy their food, I think it's pretty delicious. I have tried their avocado toast and their Mediterranean bowl and their PB No J super berry bowl. All of the items I have tried were very satisfying. I also had their liquid meals, which are also pretty good as well. Overall good food, fresh products, all vegan but all very delicious. Their homemade granola - two thumbs up.
Value: Overpriced!!!! I bought a 16 oz liquid meal and a large Mediterranean bowl and it cost me $25.
Overall Experience : Love the place, love the decor, but overpriced. You would think eating healthy (eating leaves and fruits) and not eating any meat would cost you less. Not the case. Besides from the prices and the wait, it's a nice place to go if you want to grab a...
Read moreThe BEST wraps in town! I first saw Fruitive at the White House and Center City markets. When I saw their store in City Center, I decided to give it a try. I highly recommend The Tuscan Kale Grilled wrap, it's amazing!! It's very nutritious and super filling packed with quinoa, kale, butternut squash, caramelized onions. With all the healthy ingredients, the wrap is still delicious. Even the wraps at Chop't aren't as good.
I've had the tacos - I like the Southwest, Sesame, and Tuscan. They are made of collard greens and very tasty and FILLING. On Tuesdays after 4pm, you can buy 2 tacos, and get the 3rd one free.
The granola is good too. I bought a bag, a bit expensive for $8, but it's pretty flavorful and worth it. Packed with oats, apples, almonds, chia seeds, etc. you can't go wrong.
Contrary to their core, their juices are okay. I've had the Dragon berry and Iron Berry. They aren't that good and not worth the steep price - $12 for juice. Save your money and get the wraps at Fruitive. Jrink is a better option for juices. The hidden gem, Forever Young Cafe, in the Ronald Reagon building has the best smoothies and juices made with real yogurt...
