I stayed at the Marriott Washington DC from December 26-28, in room 435, with my cousin (the booking was under her name). While the stay itself was good and the hotel’s location was excellent—making our time in DC both memorable and enjoyable—our experience at checkout was deeply disappointing and left a sour impression of the hotel. After checking out on December 28, we left our three pieces of luggage with the bellhop to store as our train was scheduled for 4 PM. We spent the day sightseeing and returned to the hotel around 3 PM to retrieve our bags. However, when we approached the bellhop, the staff member on duty at the time (who mentioned to another guest that he had just started his shift at 3 PM) treated us with a shocking lack of professionalism and courtesy. The bellhop was extremely rude and insisted that we tip him before he would return our luggage. While I fully understand and appreciate the tipping culture, his behavior crossed all lines of decency. He blatantly demanded a tip in an aggressive manner, even though the process of retrieving our bags took him less than 10 seconds. What’s worse, he outright refused to hand over one of our bags until I tipped him, effectively holding it “hostage” and forcing us into an uncomfortable and humiliating situation. When I questioned his attitude, he became increasingly curt and dismissive. His tone was condescending, and it was clear he had no regard for basic customer service. This behavior was not only unprofessional but also deeply disrespectful. To end the standoff and avoid further embarrassment, I reluctantly gave him a tip just to get our luggage back. This experience completely overshadowed what had otherwise been a pleasant stay. It is unacceptable for any hotel staff to treat guests this way, especially at a reputable property like Marriott. Guests should feel respected and valued, not pressured or strong-armed into tipping through intimidation or rude behavior. Unfortunately, I did not catch the bellhop’s name, but as mentioned, he started his shift at 3 PM on Saturday, December 28. I urge hotel management to address this issue immediately, as it reflects poorly on the hotel’s standards and damages the Marriott brand’s reputation. I hope this feedback is taken seriously, as no guest should have to endure such treatment. This experience has

The Washington Marriott at Metro Center is listed on Google Maps as a 4-star hotel, located within one block of the Metro Center stop of the Metro/Subway system where multiple transit lines meet. This hotel is only 3 stops away from Union Station on the red line of the Metro.

The hotel was extremely responsive when interacting with them on the Marriott Bonvoy chat app, which I use almost exclusively to communicate with the hotel. I reached out to them hours in advance of my arrival requesting an upgrade and to give them updates on my arrival.

When my train was late, I told the hotel via the chat app. They told me that they were upgrading me and that I could use my ekey so I wouldn't have to go to the front desk upon my arrival. I did exactly as I was told and went to the room in the app with the ekey. It turns out that the room I entered was not an upgraded room, nor did it have the extra items I had requested. I wound up just going to sleep, because it was so late.

I come to find out that the hotel staff member never changed my ekey to the upgraded room, so I went to the wrong room. Apparently, it's a two-step process and they never completed the second part. They offered the upgrade the second day but at that point I had already unpacked and declined the offer. I asked that a physical key be made for me, and they complied. I also requested housekeeping for the room.

After returning from my first day or meetings my room key did not work. The front desk was confused where I was supposed to be, insisting that I was in another room, even though my things were in the room I left in the morning. That got cleared up and I finally got into the room, a room that was never cleaned.

The manager did call me and offer immediate housekeeping service, to which I declined, because of the later hour. The manager was very apologetic and after returning from the club lounge for a snack, the manager had a bottle of wine and chocolates delivered to my room as a way of apologizing. It was a nice touch. I appreciate that they followed through with trying to make it right for me after continually dropping the ball.

The room was comfortable with great bedding and tasteful, modern furnishings. The bathroom was bright and clean. The shower head and wand make for a really nice shower. The pump toiletries are appreciated vs. the single use ones.

The Club lounge was very nicely stocked and is open 24/7. The wine at $22/glass (largest pour) was a bit steep but I don't mind if the quality is there. Their cab was actually very good.

Based on the above I will be giving the...
