Mixed Feelings at I Egg U – Great Ambiance, Service Left Much to Be Desired
I'm no stranger to exploring various dining establishments, and I consider my palate fairly discerning. Service quality is something I value highly, and while it usually reflects in my tip, today it compels me to write this review for I Egg U in Washington DC.
Let's start on a high note: the ambiance of I Egg U is genuinely inviting. The decor strikes a comfortable balance between chic and cozy, welcoming guests right from the entrance. Although space is tight, there's a small walkway facilitating movement, which is thoughtful given the layout. Observing the alcohol selection, it seemed adequate, though I didn't indulge as I was with family.
Upon arrival, the place buzzed with activity. After a brief wait, we were informed by the staff that the bar had free seating. This is where we met Kat, our server behind the counter. Initially, her service was acceptable, albeit not particularly warm or memorable.
The dilemma of the morning was choosing between the Buttermilk French Toast and the Cereal Killer French Toast. Opting for the latter with a side of sausage crumbles seemed promising. While waiting, I couldn't help but notice the dynamic of the service team. It appeared strained and more inward-focused than customer-oriented.
When curiosity got the best of me, I inquired about a pink-hued drink on tap, wondering if it was a non-alcoholic option I could enjoy. Unfortunately, Kat's response lacked the warmth and patience I anticipated. Her abruptness when explaining it was an Arnold Palmer (a drink I'm quite familiar with, but intrigued by its unique color here) discouraged any further engagement on my part.
The overall experience left me in a quandary. While the food was satisfactory, the service dampened the experience. I believe that exceptional service can elevate an average meal, but lackluster service paired with mediocre food is a recipe for disappointment.
In closing, I hope management will address these concerns for future patrons. As for returning, if I'm in the vicinity, maybe I'll give I Egg U another chance. But would I seek it out? Unlikely. To Kat, I extend my best wishes and a gentle reminder of the importance of quality service in the...
Read moreCute little place in Capitol Hill area. Nice staff. We ordered: A BLT, a Vietnamese Egg coffee, an affogato and an OMG Loaded.
My BLT with added Avocado was okay. First couple of bites was good until it got a bit overwhelming with the [sweet Aioli] sauce. perhaps it would have been better with a little less sauce; it kind of took a way the clean and savory taste of just simple lettuce, tomatoes and bacon. On the positive note, it has generous amount of bacon slices [4-5].
Vietnamese Egg coffee - I had this in Vietnam and also make this at home ... it's a trendy drink in Hà Nội. Vietnamese coffee is strong and thick, and it is an espresso made from a French drip. With that said, I can check this off as tried it and will not order again. I am certain that the coffee was just regular filtered coffee because it tasted nothing like a dripped espresso, cant taste the condensed milk either neither is the egg. My hubby said Affogato [ espresso pour over gelato ] was good. His OMG Loaded was good. But too many potatoes.
Will I come back, yes because it is my first time and there are other dishes that I havent tried ... so it's only fair not to give bad review if I only tried a couple of dishes 😉
Dislike - there's a 20% service charge automatically added to a bill that is more than $20.00. And on the bottom of the bill there is also a line for tip ... we almost double tip until we read the receipt...
Read moreWonderful new quaint spot in Navy Yard where the breakfast options are vast. I’ve tried lots of breakfast places in DC & Navy Yard but there was room for another and this place is going to fit in nicely. They offer a nice menu that matches some traditional menu items with other unique twist like the Fontina Egg Scramble, bulgogi, milk bread and a spicy Gochujang Aioli. The ambience is modern, warm and bright & the service is wonderful. As the bartender told me, they want to pay attention to detail and feature locally sourced food. I tried the hatch green chili smothered pork belly with cream & cotija cheese layered over their signature milk bread with a fried egg in between. I went back the next day and tried the chicken fried sausage with black pepper gravy topped with a fried egg and layered over the milk bread. I can’t wait to come back and go through the menu. They have lots to choose from including the “lox of love” taters & toast, avocado shrimp toast, French toast. They’re still rolling out their menu and have some an all day brunch menu that includes a Reubenish sandwich, Turkey club and a BLT. I can’t overlook telling you about their coffee service. It’s top notch coffee that includes pour overs, cappuccino, espresso and lots of other beverage options including fresh squeezed OJ. The kimchi egg sandwich was also incredible! It Has a...
