We are originally from New York. I'm accustomed to good Chinese food. The Pacific Northwest is challenged in this department. We read the relatively positive reviews for this restaurant and decided to give it a chance.
When we visit a new Chinese restaurant for the first time, we order our "standard" dinner: won ton soup, eggrolls, pork fried rice, moo goo gai pan for me and kung pow chicken for my wife. We got the "small"won ton soups. The bowls were very small, so were the won tons. The dumplings were doughy and very stingy on the filling. The broth was barely warm and tasted like slightly salty water with raw scallions in it.
The egg rolls were also very thick skinned. We ordered chicken egg rolls. My wife found a piece of chicken in hers. All I got was cabbage and dough. Egg rolls are more like spring rolls out here. These were thicker and very disappointing.
The fried rice was so dry we couldn't eat it without mixing it with sauce from our entrees. It was the right color (brown like in the East. True Chinese fried rice is light yellow -- we prefer the brown).
My moo goo gai pan was also the right color. It's supposed to be chicken breast and vegetables, traditionally Chinese cabbage, pea pods, water chestnuts, and mushrooms. Rose Garden's version has everything except the nice, green cabbage. There were a lot of chicken chunks; Moo goo should be sliced white meat. I found maybe two slices of water chestnut and three or four pea pods. I got a whopping four mushrooms! The sauce was bland to the point of being tasteless.
My wife had kung pow chicken. It looked good and had a nice blend of ingredients. She said the chicken left an unpleasant aftertaste.
The service was like the food; lacking in quality. We had a long wait to order. The soup arrived about five minutes after we ordered. A minute later, all of the other dishes arrived together. I would have hoped we would have been given time to eat our soup, then the egg rolls, followed by the entrees.
Without any beverages other than the tea and water, the check came to $60 for the two of us. That seems about average for the area.
Needless to say, we're not coming back. Save your money. This isn't a good choice for...
Read moreWe ordered from Rose Garden for the first time tonight, after reading many great reviews. Our usual spot was closed, due to it being New Years Eve, so we tried something new - but we will not be back. It felt like a waste of $100 unfortunately.
I called to make an order for pickup, and the woman who answered the phone was very pleasant. She let me know before ordering they were very busy and looking at an hour+ wait time - which I was fine with. I appreciated her letting me know ahead of time, before making the order.
I will start with their food grade - when we went to pick the order up, their food grade rating was only ‘Okay’. Had I known that before ordering, I likely would have gone somewhere else. But at this point, we had already ordered so there was nothing that could be done.
The pickup process was easy, the food was ready on time, as promised. They were very busy.
When we got home and unpacked the food, I immediately noticed the sauce for the sweet and sour chicken was not in the bag - very annoying. Now we just had a container of fried chicken pieces with no sauce. The lemon chicken sauce was packed separate - which I do appreciate, so the chicken does not become soggy during travel. The portion size of everything was pretty good, other than the Mongolian beef - which was barely enough to split between our family of 4.
While unpacking the food, I noticed the containers of noodles and rice were piping hot - I even commented ‘oh wow, the food is nice and fresh!’ With that said, everything else in our order was ice cold. Both chickens (sweet and sour and lemon) as well as the Mongolian beef. We also ordered BBQ pork, but that is always cold, so that was no concern.
Cold and sauce less, I tried to make the best of the meal. Again, I appreciated they were open New Years Eve. With that said, other than the Mongolian beef and pork fried rice, EVERYTHING was tasteless. The chicken had zero seasonings, the noodles were bland and the BBQ pork was rubbery and tasteless. The Mongolian beef was very good, the best part of the meal, it had a little kick of spice but was not...
Read moreWe have been coming to rose garden for years. It’s our go to place to treat our family at and order all the dishes we love. Usually we don’t have problems but the last few times we’ve gone we’ve had a gentlemen as our server. He is rude and acts annoyed that he has to do his job. Yesterday there were five of us adults and my two year old, when the bill came I asked the server what the automatic gratuity rule was, and he said “six adults.” Mind you, we always tip at least 20% anyway - so I counted out the five adults at the table and he quickly changed his story to “six people” and said he included my TWO year old. I told him that felt dishonest but I paid and decided I wanted to speak to the owner. I asked him to call them from the kitchen and he brought a woman out - while I was explaining to her my frustration because it seemed the server was taking advantage of us - the server proceeded to lie and say "I never said that" when I said he said "six adults." He called me a liar. So i decided to go back and find an old receipt, because i hadn't paid much attention before this. This gentlemen has charged us an automatic 20% gratuity every time regardless of the amount of people we have. Attached is a picture of the written bill they give before charging your card - the 20% automatic gratuity is written in and the guests box clearly says 4! I usually wouldn't pay attention and didn't catch it that time but i'm glad i took a picture to look back at. Seems he’s a liar ALL the time and charges an automatic 20% tip every bill. So please be aware when they bring you your bill! There might be an automatic gratuity charged regardless of the...
