fyi: imo this place is actually 2/5, but i always leave 5 stars for local/non-chain places, bc i feel kinda guilty otherwise. note: i haven't had their sandwiches yet, so maybe i'll change my mind once i try those.
we got the eggplant parm and meat sauce; tbh when we got to the store, we didn't really want the parm bc it was so small, but whatever, thought i need to try it at least once cuz i live so close
when we got home we realized the "sell by" date on the parm was like 3-5 days ago (can't remember exactly, but it was surprisingly long). not sure why this was still being sold or labeled like that. kinda wish i got a sandwich, feel like maybe that would've been a better buy , but i only realized they had those as i was paying (the menu is a paper on the desk)
taste wise: both were fine. i mean they were good, but i guess i was expecting more because of the "quality/authentic ingredients" shpeel. but i guess i shoulda expected that tbh since i don’t think my taste buds are good enough to notice/appreciate things like that
but yea pretty awful value overall i'd say; the portions are tiny (which i understand it's bc the ingredients are prob expensive), but regardless, at least for someone like me, it's...
Read moreIf you miss Europe, take the Metro to Brookland and walk to Salumeria. This small Italian deli will transport you back to Rome. The cured meats hanging from the ceiling, the wine on the shelves, and the deli menu will have you coming back for more.
It's owned by nearby Menomale, a top rated pizzeria, and open for lunch and dinner. They bake Italian pastries (canoles, brownies, etc), pasta salads and an array of sandwiches. Their top seller "The Italian" is excellent coming with several meats on a hard Italian sub. Their crudo sandwich for $9.50 is really good. Note: Their sandwiches don't have as much meat on them compared to other delis like Seventh Hill or Mangialardo's.
The staff are super helpful, friendly, and honest. The worker told me what was good and what wasn't the best, which is helpful and makes me trust her.
If you want a good deli, venture up to Brookland, grab a sandwich, and wander the beautiful streets...
Read moreI love this place, and try to give them my business as often as I can. This is an Italian grocery like you’d find in Italy. Small, adorable, great quality, run by actual Italians. Their sandwiches are fantastic with fresh baked bread, and we bought the platter for our son’s christening and fed twenty people. They also have ice cream! It’s one of our only ice cream shops in the neighborhood, and I like to take my son there for a little corner store gelato on warm days. Another highlight is their “grandma style” deep dish pizza for you to bake at home, you just have to call to place the order. The store also sells wine and Italian prepared foods. Staff are friendly and helpful, so glad to have them...
