Being Bolivian this place is one I would recommend to all those who have and have not eaten Bolivian food. Staff is very friendly, they are knowledgeable about their menu and offer good options as substitutes.
Also I am vegan 🌱, so that usually means there is no Bolivian food out there for me… This place makes it all possible! First vegan 🌱 salteña I have ever tried and it’s delicious! Filled with quinoa, potato and peas, the flavor is an excellent option for vegan/vegetarians. Also if I could recommend the quinoa burger it is also delicious, super tasty and filling. Finally don’t forget to try the coffee, it is made out of Bolivian beans and tastes very good 😊 😋.
On the non-vegan options, my fiancé tried the chicken salteña and she loved it. She’s also a huge fan the sopa de mani, which is a peanut soup, perfect as the fall weather is rolling in. Enjoy as a quick bite for breakfast, or sit down for lunch or dinner :).
Finally there are chairs and tables outside for a place to sit, inside there are hightops to also dine...
Read moreI came by after reading the DCist article about Saya Saltena, as I was interested in the "soup empanada" concept, and the price point sounded extremely reasonable. I'm also a big coffee drinker, and hearing that it was a lunch and coffee place sealed the deal for me.
It was great! I really liked the spicy beef saltena and chicken saltena that I tried. Two (six dollars each) was more than enough to fill me up for lunch, and I am usually a big eater. The coffee was great; I like coffee with acidic notes and it tastes different from what you'd get at other coffee places. My buddy got the chicken sandwich and seemed happy with it. I will try it next time. Service was fast and very friendly, prices are reasonable (you're generally going to spend less than 15 dollars here, which is great given how much prices have risen in the last few years). There's a couple tables outside and it was a beautiful day, so we sat there, but it is primarily a takeout place. The lama murals are cute. ...
Read moreAbsolutely, EXCEPTIONAL quality of product and customer service!! I live in Minnesota where my mother passed in March of 2011 and shortly before that was my last saltena. Last month, I stopped into Saya Saltena during a visit to Washington DC. My visit to Saya Saltena brought back so many memories because the flavor and quality of saltenas brought me back to those I ate more than a decade ago. I have had several since then and none that have come close. The gentleman who helped us out that day also had impeccable service. Anyhow, I inquired about Saya Saltena possibly overnighting saltenas to Minnesota and low and behold I had three dozen arrive this morning! Maria Iturralde made this possible and was extremely pleasant to deal with. If you get a chance to stop by - the first bite is well worth the trip! Thanks again,...
