I'm not from DC or the East Coast. So i walked into the store trying to get my sense of directions after walking over from a nearby hotel. I noticed there is no counter service. On the side there are kiosks to place a digital order. No cash accepted. I had a corporate card from Shake Shack, on my phone. I didn't see that option on the kiosk screen. I asked someone cooking burgers, and a few seconds later a young lady came out to help. She was very pleasant, patient, and friendly. She figured out how to accept the card as it wasn't a standard gift card. I was grateful.
Not even ten minutes later, another young woman came from behind the count with my order. She gave me the bag and I said "thank you, I appreciate you." I did a quick look in the bag to assure the order correct. It was. I only needed condiments. At the condiment stand in the restaurant, was only ketchup but a sign that read, ask the staff for other/more condiments.
The young lady who deliver the food to me was at the soda machine filling her cup and taking intermittent sips, then refills, sips, then refill...I didn't want to interrupt her but she was the only person working that was in sight. So I asked miss do you have mayo?
She mumbled something. I couldn't hear her. She mumbled again, between another sip from her cup under the restaurant soda machine. I had to als one more time because I couldn't make out what she said. She said, "Kitchen!" I didn't say anything but I was thinking what does that mean? Ask the kitchen? Go in the kitchen?
So I stood closer to the counter/cashier machine where no one was, and waited, straining my neck to try and see if someone was close enough to just hand me a mayo. The lady put her cup down, put her mask back on walked over to the mayos behind the counter and handed me two. "thank you miss. I appreciate you. Sorry to disturb you ." Like my thank you before, she said nothing.
When I got to the hotel I reheated the food. The bun was soaked in what tasted like butter. I know Shake Shack does a buttered bun, but after 7 paper towels of blotting, the bun was unsalvageable. The small quarter sized tomato was whitish/pink. This was visibly far too much oil/butter.
I only wrote this long comment to say while the staff was trying and getting product out, there is a lack of streamline experience for the customer. And there is a sterile coldness that seemed like they were either out of business or just a cold heartless operation. I work for a major airline and I can attest, treating people with no feeling can destroy a business just as fast as treating...

“Good, but fairly overpriced …
Shake Shack at The Wharf delivers solid burgers and standout shakes in a picturesque waterfront setting. Popular picks include the SmokeShack, Truffle Burger, crispy crinkle fries, and colorful milkshakes. Pricing skews on the high side for portion sizes—a recurring gripe. Still, if you’re after a quick, tasty burger in a scenic spot and don’t mind paying a premium, it’s a decent fast-casual option.

Read moreIf I could just take a minute. I said when we left that I wouldn’t go and leave a review, but I feel like it’s soo necessary. My husband and I and some of our family took a trip to DC this weekend and decided on Friday to walk around the Wharf. We were going to get seafood, but we decided to get Shake Shack instead. My husband has a dairy allergy, and also doesn’t eat mayo or cream based sauces, so I asked if he could get the cheese on the side, along with the shack sauce. The 1st time I ordered it, they got it totally wrong as they put everything on the burger, so I took it back, not knowing they had charged me an extra .50 to put these items on the side. They fixed it again and this time they put the cheese on the side and left the shack sauce on the burger. I felt so bad at that point that my husband was worried that if I took it back again that they would mess with his food in some manner. The people in the back cooking already had a whole conversation about my order while I was standing there, and you could tell they felt some type of way when we brought it back the 1st time. I really didn’t want to have to leave this establishment with a bad review and I even went out of my way and PURCHASED (on top of the two that I had already purchased) another burger just to see if they would get it right, and this time they just said forget it and put everything in separate containers they didn’t even bother to put the ketch or mustard on the burger they threw the packets in the bag (which was much better, but not what I asked for). My husband didn’t eat it though, for the fear that it had been messed over, but I wanted to give them the opportunity to get it right...just an FYI they still didn’t get it right after me paying...
