I used to go every Sunday to The Tombs 15 years ago after spending some time at Georgetown University. It was a cool place full of students and parents in a literally underground place from the mid 1800s. And the food was very good. It was a very pleasant place to be and an awesome place to have a good meal for tourists not wanting to do the basic level tourism.
I do not remember when was the last time I went to the tombs but it was probably around 10 years ago.
I went there last week and everything was perfect until the food came to the table. The poached eggs my wife ordered were overcooked, the potatoes were overcooked, the kids pasta was flat, the coffee did not smell fresh and when I asked for fresh coffee it was a little better. The food was right on time so I thought the cook was either bad or did not go to work that day and left a beginner there. The food also was left in the warmers too long.
Conclusion: maybe for beers is good to go, maybe for breakfast is good to go but if you want to risk the pleasure of eating well with a family member visiting you simply skip this place. It simply is not the old The Tombs. Go to the University, take a deep breath admiring the architecture, see the exorcist stairs and head for another brunch place other...
Read moreWe were visiting a friend in Georgetown Hospital and decided to stop by here for dinner. It was a Sunday night, so probably not as busy given that it is in a college town. Definitely a young crowd though.
It truly lives up to its name. After walking down a flight of steps, you walk into an area that consist of a bar and two large seating areas. We were quickly seated in a booth near the bar.
Matthew was our waiter and he did an excellent job. Very professional and friendly.
For dinner tonight we had nachos and mac & cheese bites to start. Both were very good. For entrées, we had the smash cheeseburger, the crispy potato skins appetizer, a chicken tender basket, and two barbecue pork sandwiches. I had the barbecue pork sandwich and it was excellent. To drink we had the adult mint chocolate chip shake, and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. I’ve heard the food described as elevated pub food, and I would agree.
Overall, it is what you would expect to experience in a college town bar. The food was good, the service was great, and it was fun to watch people.
So, if you are in Georgetown, I would stop on by this place, and at least have an appetizer and a drink....
Read moreWhile visiting Georgetown, our original plans for dinner changed. We had a group of 16 and needed to make something happen and fast. Our sponsor looked for the closes place that could seat our group. We were thankful the Tombs could get us in. Menu choices were small, but diverse. I had the Reuben and the Old Bay fries. I did try a small bowl of chili as well. I’m from the South and Sweet Chili DOES NOT fly with me. Most people don’t even eat real Texas chili where I’m from. So, if want to try it - go for it. The other food was great! You won’t see this place on DD&D’s but, it I would return if in the area again. Plenty of meat with right balance of kraut, cheese and dressing with bread toasted to exactly the way I enjoy. Meat was seasoned perfectly and not dry. As for the Old Bay fries, no reason to think you’re getting something unique! It is basically an item in every kitchen in the south. Overall, I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. As we ended our dinner, the college crowd started rolling in. I’m 60 now but it did remind me of our late night adventures at Ole Miss!!! We were a much better generation...
