I have lived in and around the DMV area since I was fourteen years old. When I was young I would sit in a coffee shop and read books at the edge of the water in Alexandria, I have since moved to Rockville and that hasn’t changed, wherever I go, what ever place in the DMV I’m at, reading, relaxing, hanging, have happened in coffee shops/cafès. Forgive the lengthy post, but it is a rare opportunity for me to speak about this topic and not drive anyone listening into a deep sleep for which they require a constant in take of coffee to endure my lecture…I was once a barista, and during that time I gained a great appreciation for the job, it is a lot of work, hard work but good work. A good coffee shop is decided by the synergy of the team in the shop, a of confidence in the person next to do there job can help you do your own job better. That effect is infectious and can permeate the atmosphere of a cafè and that is where the magic happens…you see a café can become more then just a place where you go to get coffee and something to eat, that becomes the pretense for meeting a friend. Sometimes it’s spontaneous, sometimes it’s planed, but the coffee shop becomes the vector for the age old practice of people meeting up with one another and bonding with good food and drink. Think of it like gathering around a camp fire roasting marshmallows with hot chocolate. Except that we don’t have the opportunity to out camping in the woods all time with our friends and family, or very much woods to do so. The development of urbanization has a strange phenomenon of sometimes running counter to human nature. We are split apart in the city, pulled out job/lives in different directions seven days a week, and something has been lost. The sense of community, and connection to your friends and neighbors is illy facilitated by the style of modern life. So when a café opens up it can provide that functional third space where the connections between people that people need is given the time and space to develop. If you have read through this far, thank you for enduring my ramblings. If you will indulge me further…Coffee Republic has, in my opinion, has cultivated an atmosphere that gives it the sense of a true third place. It’s the little things that are difficult to reproduce artificially that give it that charm. The sense of team work with the baristas, the ideal chatter between patrons, the mood setting decor, the ambient music in the background, the friendly and personable service from the staff, it’s a mixture of all of it that Coffee Republic has accomplished in at least two of its locations. Recall that I love to sit in the tranquil state of rest with book in my lap and a good cup of warm coffee near at hand-Coffee Republic allows me to effortlessly slip into that comfortable feeling. I have spent literally an entire day with coffee and books, something that happens whenever I am in the right environment, difficult to come by in any other place in a city. I would recommend Coffee Republic to those who want a local place to meet with friends and neighbors, a place to sit and talk, to laugh and unwind, a place to be solitary with out being alone. For people like me, it is certainly a place to get lost in a good book only realize you’ve been there all day when they tell you they’re closing for the evening. The picture below is mark of an artist, not sure how they do it, but it does elevate making coffee into...

The shop is busy and my order was put at 9:45am according to my receipt. About 10:00am I asked the "tall" young guy how much longer and he said: still in progress after he even asked his co workers (obviously it seems like throwing jokes is more important)...about 10:15am they called my name to tell me that there's none philly meat for the grilled cheese, basically 30 min waiting when I was told 20 min waiting. Now, as you can see on my receipt I asked to get my money because I'm a customer and time is valuable. He didn't charge me for the sandwich, but he still charged me for 2 drinks and the "tip" 🤔 and he managed to give me a lecture about their computer system works this way and the way they do things there...bottom line, 1) you don't argue or debate with customers about how you do things and leave the customer unsatisfied 2) a coffee shop is based on customers and that's how the establishment gets their money and employees get paid 3) it's insane to think that you have pay $13.42 for 2 drinks including a tip and top of that you agreed that you and your crew made a mistake by not communicating to each other or not even checking your inventory. Lesson: $13.40 is not worth to argue with a customer when you admit and know that you're wrong. Next time, give it up and own your mistake because at the end of the day you need CUSTOMERS. This is not high school nor your ego or pride to be right or wrong,...

Dropped in for a quick bite early Sunday afternoon. Found a table while hubs ordered a bagel with egg and bacon and a coffee. These were pretty good and fresh. My broccoli cheese soup was a congealed lukewarm mess. It was an off shade of tannish brown with teeny flecks of green. Smell was not great. Hungry so I tried to eat it. This is without a doubt the worst broccoli cheese soup ever. It was even worse than canned versions from the grocery store, including the generics. The menu states that saltines come with the soup, but when asked for them to see if they would help, the uninterested server said they were out. We also had an "apple" fritter, which was on the stale side, not particularly soft, and had one tiny bit of apple in it to lend it the apple name. It was overly sweet with a thick glaze. I realize that the soup probably was was mass produced somewhere, but they need a better supplier. The fritter was also outsourced, but it was a real disappointment. We did spend $20 for the meal, but they could do much better for a location in Georgetown. Just because they have a captive audience of students should not allow them to be so cavalier about service and...

Honestly this place has gone way downhill. I ordered a large peppermint mocha with nonfat milk and got a cup of whole milk. It has no flavor and contains probably 1 shot of espresso in it. I can't even taste the espresso so I don't know what's giving it any brown color. After I ordered, the cashier threw my cup in the air and it landed on the ground. The barista did not have any instructions written on it other than PM. They both were also pretty rude to other customers. Someone else accidentally took another customer's medium nonfat cappuccino and she had beg the cashier to even give her a drip coffee. She didn't even ask them to remake her drink. For how expensive drinks ($6.06 for a peppermint mocha) are here, you're better off walking down to O and Wisconsin and going to Compass.
