My husband and I typically stay at a high-end Marriott hotel every year to celebrate our anniversary. Our favorite hotel in DC (the W Hotel) unfortunately stopped being part of the Marriott family a few years ago. They had set the standard for anniversary celebrations for us (they always provided champagne, upgraded us to their best available suite, including their Presidential Suite once, etc).
This year for our special day we decided to try out the Ritz in Georgetown (in hopes of finding our new favorite DC hotel). While the team at this property was able to upgrade us to a one-bedroom suite (I used one of my suite night awards for this), the overall experience left a lot to be desired.
First off, the hallway where our room was located (West Wing, 2nd floor) smelled like an old closet - the space is in need of some TLC and deep cleaning. The design of the room itself was reminiscent of a lower category Marriott brand (Residence Inn or Courtyard) versus what you'd expect of a brand like the Ritz Carlton. While the bathroom was spacious, the towels were old and not soft at all, the overhead lighting by the sinks hideous (impossible to do your makeup here), the toilet tiny and the toilet paper...oh gosh. You'd think a high-end brand charging ~$800 per night/90k points would provide soft toilet paper and not the kind of sand paper you find at a movie theater or motel.
I'll say that the team did provide some nice chocolates to acknowledge our special day. However, my standards are way higher than this, especially after staying at other amazing properties around the world where the attention to detail has been second to none. Macaroons won't cut it when everything else is so mediocre.
I guess people who stay here on repeat are doing so for the location. I also have a feeling this brand is likely geared towards older men who may have a different definition of luxury at this point. I kept thinking of how awful the lighting in the bathroom was for any woman trying to do their makeup - whomever designed and whomever is maintaing this place isn't catering to a younger, more...
Read moreThis is my second stay ever at a Ritz Carlton, the other one being the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco. I have stayed at different Marriott (and SPG) hotels, but the Ritz Carlton Georgetown really discourages me from staying at other Ritz properties in the future. I was visiting a friend in DC and picked this property as it had a higher review than the other Ritz in the DC area.
The good: Upon getting dropped off at the hotel, we were greeted by name, which is pretty impressive. The location is good and it's easy to walk to restaurants and shops. Plenty of bottled water in room. The staff is friendly.
The bad: The carpet is really dirty and worn out. The only saving grace is the in-room slippers provided. The shower and the bath tub is far apart so it is hard to get from one to another. The phone does not have a "Front Desk" button on it, and also I'm not sure how to operate it - I clicked one of the buttons and expected it to be on speaker, but there was no sound, so I think the phone was broken. I needed to request for late check-out and ended up using the mobile app to request it. The closet door is really heavy you need to put a foot on one of the doors to stop it from closing. One of the food (mango something) on the honor bar didn't look fresh, so we were hesitant about purchasing any of the food. The shower is sometimes hot and sometimes cold, and the hose is really noisy. One side of the bed does not have easily accessible power plug, so I had to charge my phone overnight on the desk. There is not enough towel for two persons for two nights (I usually skip housekeeping service mid-stay for a 2-night stay). I was watching NBA on TNT and the TV blacked out for 1 minute.
Overall, it felt "cheap" and is not what I would expect from a Ritz. I think the hotel is due for...
