Blackbird Doughnuts Watertown — Restaurant in Watertown

I got a box for friends who graciously chopped them all up so we could try a bit of each. The passion fruit one is DIVINE! I don’t normally like doughnuts. I got them because my friend does. But the passion fruit filling was like a custard, and it felt like some fancy flan! Delicious! Strangely, the Boston cream was my least favorite. The filling wasn’t pudding-enough for me. Too liquidy and the taste was off, but I found myself enjoying the oatmeal one and the coconut and the mint chocoalte and the cake ones too!

Pricy. Very pricy, but even the five year-old said “mommy, these are better than the place we normally get them from” (referring to Dunkin. And he could t have been more right! Night and day!

Oh! And I got a rooibos, soymilk latte, and the tea...

First, the good: The ube iced latte was fantastic. Smooth, flavorful, and refreshing. I’d definitely order that again.

Now, the bad: Unfortunately, everything else we ordered fell far below expectations. We got five donuts and six minis, and they ranged from mediocre to completely inedible.

The Boston Cream had a disturbing fizzy taste, like the filling had gone off. Clearly past its shelf life. The Raspberry Lemon donut was stale and chewy. Tasted like it was made days ago. The Carrot Cake donut had a strong, unpleasant taste of old fryer oil. Couldn't eat it. The minis were dry, stale, and equally disappointing.

All in, we spent $35 for one good drink and a box of inedible donuts.

I have noticed this donut shop after visiting arsenal yards and my wife told me that we should try it. This morning I was in the area and stopped for some donuts. I got a half dozen and a coffee for $25, so my expectations were high as far as donuts go. After trying their donuts I can honestly say just go to Dunkin. Their proofed fluffy donuts were very chewy and tasted like grease. I think this might have something to do with the weather but again Dunkin's donuts have never tasted like this. Their cake donuts were okay, but I really prefer the poofy donuts so over I was kind of let down. In short I will not be buying donuts from...
