Despite its name, the Beach Street Cafe is lodged tightly like a splinter in the palm of a massive agricultural compound, surrounded by grey warehouses and produce pallets stacked like bricks in the Great Wall of China. Its wide counter is clearly intended to serve truckers hauling central valley berries, but it has plenty of tables for families as well, both inside its narrow dining hall and out. Several waitresses quickly accommodate you with an efficient but unhurried tempo. The menu itself is quite expansive and not even all too expensive, particularly considering the portions. It's littered with typos but has plenty of detail. It's your standard Mexican American breakfast diner fare: omelets, huevos rancheros, pancakes, sandwiches, coffee... I opted for the huevos rancheros and the "homemade clam chowder" advertised on the wall, as well as a thin-tasting chocolate milk. The huevos rancheros were quite good. Everything was moist without being greasy, which is an impressive feat with the beans and steak. The sauce on the eggs was rich and aromatic. It came with plenty of tortillas on the side as well. While I tend to be skeptical of the authenticity of homemade clam chowders in general, this one was quite impressive. It came in a generously sized cup and again was rich and creamy without being too heavy, with plenty of bits of briny clam. My one complaint is that the garnish was placed under the bowl -- I'm not sure how they expect it to get in the soup from there. This is definitely a worthy pitstop for those driving up and down the California coast. Grab yourself some local berries while you're in the area and...
Read moreI want to start by saying that I’ve been coming here with my family for many years and will continue to do so. I am writing this review because I think there’s so much room for improvement for the chilaquiles. My boyfriend and I went because I was craving chilaquiles so I got the chilaquiles scramble. It was so disappointing :( it was basically just the chips with their house salsa, and eggs mixed in there. The house salsa is great but it should be an addition to the dish, not the main sauce for the dish. We also got the huevos rancheros and the sauce for that was pretty good so at least we know that they can make a salsa for the chilaquiles that’s rich in flavor and more representative of what chilaquiles are supposed to be and taste like. There’s so much potential to make them the best...
Read moreI went here for a date and the food was truly unique compared to other breakfast places I've been to. The textures and tastes were surprisingly soothing, like something my mother would make. The service was okay. Not super bad, not super good. The staff were attentive and very polite to all tables in my field of view. However, there were frequent miscommunications about my order despite me trying to communicate as best I could. I was brought two orders of the meal I selected and when I explained I only ordered one, they took the extra back but then tried to charge me for the second order when the check was delivered. All was cleared up, thankfully. I love this place's atmosphere as well. To anyone who's been to a Red Robin or Mel's it's that kind of atmosphere mixed with beachside...
